Chapter 8 - My Father’s Last Weekend

Elena returned to her childhood home.
Abandoned.
Scheduled for renovation.
In her father’s study, she found scratches beneath the desk.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a letter.
Jonathan admitted he helped conceal the existence of Margaret Hale.
Not because he wanted her erased.
Because his father demanded it.
Jonathan later tried to restore her rights.
Nathan opposed him.
Richard Whitmore opposed him.
Thomas Reed supported him.
The four men fractured.
Then Thomas disappeared.
Jonathan became afraid.
He hid the evidence.
Seventeen years later, Jonathan died of a heart attack.
Natural, according to records.
But the letter ended with:
If Nathan tells you I was at peace, he is lying.
Elena sat on the dusty floor and cried.
Her godfather had built part of her childhood out of lies.
Then Marcus found another page.
Jonathan’s handwriting.
One sentence:
