Chapter 6 - The Necklace

Nathan claimed Marcus told him where they were.
Marcus denied it.
By the time police arrived, Nathan was gone.
He left no fingerprints.
No explanation.
Only a white envelope beneath the porch mat.
Inside:
GIVE ME WHAT YOUR FATHER HID.
Elena finally removed her mother’s necklace.
She had worn it nearly every day for fourteen years.
Lily examined the pendant.
Nothing.
Then Elena remembered something.
Her mother once told her never to have it resized.
Never let a jeweler “improve” it.
Marcus had laughed when Elena repeated the story.
Now it did not seem sentimental.
They took it to a forensic technician.
Inside the pendant was a paper-thin storage strip.
Old technology.
Fragile.
Still readable.
The files contained trust documents.
Names.
Transfers.
And one photograph.
Nathan Crane.
Richard Whitmore.
Jonathan Hale.
Thomas Reed.
All four standing inside a private archive.
Dated three days before Thomas disappeared.
Marcus stared at his father’s face.
Elena looked at hers.
Both men they had spent their lives defending had been there.
One might have been a criminal.
One might have been trying to stop the others.
The files did not say which.
Then technicians opened the final document.
A list titled:
CONTINGENCY SUCCESSION.
Noah’s name had already been added.
Six months before he was born.
Someone had known Elena was pregnant before she publicly announced it.
