Chapter 20 - THE SECOND POLAROID

One year later.
Rosewood Diner.
Morning sunlight.
Lily is nine.
Daniel is making pancakes in Garcia’s kitchen and ruining the first batch.
Anna is laughing.
A Polaroid camera sits on the counter.
Lily takes the old photograph from Daniel’s coat.
Anna in 2018.
Young.
Unaware.
Frozen before everything went wrong.
Beside it, Lily places a new Polaroid.
Daniel.
Anna.
Lily.
All three smiling.
Lily writes beneath it:
FOUND AGAIN.
Daniel asks:
“What happened to ‘Nobody disappears’?”
Lily shrugs.
“That sounded dramatic.”
Anna laughs.
Daniel looks at the first photograph.
Seven years ago, he believed the worst thing that could happen was losing the person he loved.
He knows better now.
Sometimes the worse thing is being taught a lie about why you lost them.
Being made to believe they chose to leave.
Being denied the chance to fight for them.
But the truth eventually did what lies could not.
It brought choices back.
Daniel looks at Anna.
Not the woman he lost.
The woman she became.
He looks at Lily.
Not the childhood he missed.
The daughter still standing in front of him.
He finally understands what Anna once told Lily.
Adults can get lost even when they know exactly where they are.
But lost does not always mean gone.
Lily points at his coat.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“Your picture.”
Daniel looks down.
The new Polaroid is halfway out of his pocket.
He laughs.
Lily grabs it before it falls.
“Seriously?”
Anna shakes her head.
“Some things never change.”
Daniel takes the photograph.
He slides it carefully into his wallet.
Then thinks better of it.
He places it on the diner wall instead.
Beside it, Garcia hangs the old one.
Two photographs.
One before.
One after.
Anna + Daniel.
Anna + Daniel + Lily.
Seven years between them.
A lifetime inside the space.
Lily steps back.
“Which one do you like better?”
Daniel studies them.
The first holds everything he once wished he could get back.
The second holds everything he still has time to become.
He puts one arm around Anna.
The other around Lily.
“This one.”
He points to the new photograph.
Lily smiles.
“Why?”
Daniel looks at his daughter.
Then at his wife.
“Because this one is still happening.”
And for the first time in seven years, neither Daniel nor Anna looks backward.
