Chapter 19 - THE QUESTION ANNA COULD NOT ANSWER
A year after Daniel finds Lily, he and Anna are still not pretending everything is easy.
They live separately.
Date each other.
Share parenting.
Fight.
Apologize.
Learn.
Daniel asks Anna whether she wants to stay married.
She says:
“I don’t want our old marriage.”
His face falls.
Then she continues:
“I want to know if we can build a new one.”
They return to the greenhouse where he proposed years ago.
No grand proposal.
No billionaire spectacle.
Daniel gives her the old wedding ring recovered from evidence.
Anna looks at it.
Then closes his hand around it.
“No.”
Daniel’s heart sinks.
Anna pulls out a simple new ring.
“I don’t want the ring they used to bury me.”
Daniel understands.
They exchange new rings.
Lily witnesses the small ceremony.
Marcus attends.
Moreno.
Garcia.
Reed.
No one else.
Daniel vows:
“I will never call control protection.”
Anna vows:
“I will never let fear decide what truth you deserve.”
Lily whispers:
“Okay, now kiss.”
Everyone laughs.
