Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN AT EVERY FUNERAL
Rebecca Mills has been present quietly throughout Daniel’s life.
His father’s funeral.
Anna’s funeral.
Evelyn Mercer’s funeral.
Board meetings.
Family holidays.
She was Evelyn’s closest friend.
She also served as the liaison between the old medical research project and Mercer legal counsel.
The apparent “family conspiracy” narrows into something more believable:
Voss handled law and records.
Rebecca protected the institution.
Victor handled intimidation.
Jennifer discovered them.
Marcus accidentally helped expose her.
Anna became collateral when she followed the money.
Rebecca denies ordering anyone harmed.
She insists the original program produced important medical discoveries and that exposure would ruin thousands of innocent lives.
Daniel challenges her:
“You keep saying innocent people.”
“But every time you protected them, somebody else paid.”
Rebecca answers:
“That is what power does.”
Daniel replies:
“No.”
“That is what people like you tell yourselves power has to do.”
Rebecca refuses to disclose where Voss is.
Then Anna notices something.
Rebecca knows Lily’s school name.
