Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT VICTOR BROKE
Moreno arrests Rebecca on obstruction-related charges.
Victor flees.
Voss disappears.
Marcus helps federal investigators trace old financial accounts.
The case is finally closing rather than endlessly expanding.
Victor contacts Anna directly.
Not Daniel.
He asks to meet.
Moreno arranges surveillance.
Victor arrives exhausted.
No SUV.
No army of men.
No dramatic mastermind energy.
Just a frightened man who has spent seven years running from the night he accidentally killed his sister.
He confesses.
He struck Jennifer during an argument.
She fell.
Hit her head.
Stopped breathing.
Voss told him they could still contain everything.
They put Jennifer in Anna’s damaged car.
Used Anna’s missing wedding ring.
Used forged dental records.
They believed Anna would disappear permanently under Voss’s control.
Victor admits he became more violent afterward because every new crime protected the first crime.
He says:
“After Jennifer died, there was no line left.”
Anna asks:
“Why did you keep watching me?”
Victor answers:
“Because you were the only person who could still prove she tried to do the right thing.”
Before Moreno arrests him, Victor gives them one location.
Voss is going to burn the archive.
