Chapter 8 - Before Me

Ryan and Vanessa had dated in college.

For almost three years.

I learned that from a woman I had never met while sitting at my sister's kitchen table with my unborn daughter kicking beneath my ribs.

“They broke up badly,” Nina explained.

“How badly?”

“Vanessa said Ryan chose his father's company over her.”

I stared at the wall.

Ryan had never mentioned her.

Not once.

Nine years of marriage.

Eleven years together.

And somehow an entire relationship had been erased from his history.

“Why did she come back?”

“Ryan hired her firm.”

“Why?”

“His company was in trouble.”

That was new.

Ryan had told me business was growing.

Nina said otherwise.

“Two years ago, one of Ryan's major investments collapsed. Then another deal went wrong. He covered losses by moving money between companies.”

David leaned closer.

“Was it legal?”

“I don't know.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Leverage.

She hadn't simply seduced an old boyfriend.

She had returned carrying the ability to destroy him.

“What did she want?” I asked.

“Ryan.”

The answer was immediate.

“She was obsessed with proving he'd made the wrong choice.”

I placed a hand over my stomach.

“And when I got pregnant?”

“She got worse.”

Nina lowered her voice.

“She used to say the baby was the only reason he wouldn't leave you.”

My daughter moved.

A small kick.

I almost cried.

My baby was not anyone's obstacle.

She was not a problem.

She was not leverage.

She was a little girl.

My little girl.

“What happened on the stairs wasn't planned by Ryan,” Nina said.

“How do you know?”

“Because Vanessa called me that afternoon.”

My breath caught.

“Before or after?”

“Before.”

“What did she say?”

“That she was going to force you to understand your marriage was over.”

“So the push was spontaneous?”

“I think so.”

I should have felt better.

I didn't.

Spontaneous violence was still violence.

Then Nina said something unexpected.

“She also told me she had insurance.”

“What kind?”

“Not a policy.”

“What?”

“Leverage. Her word.”

Against Ryan.

“What leverage?”

“A recording.”

David looked sharply at me.

“Recording of what?”

“She never played it for me.”

The police found it later that evening.

An audio file buried inside Vanessa's cloud account.

Ryan's voice.

Vanessa's voice.

Recorded seven months earlier.

She said, “If Emily finds out about the money, she'll divorce you and take half.”

Ryan replied, “I know.”

“She'll expose you.”

“She won't.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because she trusts me.”

The cruelty of that sentence almost took my breath away.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“What happens when trust isn't enough?”

Ryan said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“Accidents happen every day.”

Ryan responded immediately.

“Don't ever say that again.”

“Why? You're thinking it.”

“No, I'm not.”

“Then why insure her for five million?”

Ryan's answer changed the entire case.

“Because the bank required key-family coverage before approving the estate refinancing. You know that.”

Silence.

Then Ryan said, “I am leaving Emily. I am not killing her.”

I closed my eyes.

He wasn't a murderer.

He was merely a man who knew his mistress was imagining my death...

and still kept letting her into my home.

That distinction mattered legally.

Emotionally, it barely mattered at all.

Then the recording continued.

Vanessa whispered, “You won't leave her.”

Ryan said, “I will after the baby is born.”

“And if you don't?”

A pause.

Vanessa's voice turned cold.

“Then I'll remove the reason you're staying.”

The audio ended.

Maya looked at me.

There was only one possible meaning.

May you like

Vanessa hadn't been talking about me.

She had been talking about my daughter.
