Chapter 13 - The Trial

Vanessa refused every plea offer.
She insisted I had attacked her first.
Then prosecutors showed her attorney the porch video.
Her story changed.
She said the push was accidental.
Then prosecutors showed the messages.
Her story changed again.
She claimed emotional distress.
Then they showed the brake-line evidence.
By the time trial began, the woman who once smiled over me on the stairs had run out of believable versions.
I testified on the second day.
Walking into court terrified me more than I expected.
Vanessa sat beside her attorney.
Dark suit.
Hair pulled back.
No cream dress.
No dramatic tears.
She looked almost ordinary.
That made it worse.
People expect monsters to look like monsters.
Most don't.
The prosecutor asked me to describe the push.
I did.
Then Ryan stepping outside.
I repeated his first words.
“Are you okay?”
The courtroom was silent.
“Who was he asking?”
“Vanessa.”
“Not you?”
“No.”
“Not about the baby?”
“No.”
The prosecutor showed the security video.
I looked at the jury instead of the screen.
I already knew every frame.
On cross-examination, Vanessa's attorney asked if I had been angry.
“Yes.”
“Jealous?”
“No.”
“You had just discovered an affair.”
“Yes.”
“Wouldn't that make anyone jealous?”
“It made me finished.”
A few jurors looked up.
The attorney changed direction.
“You told Vanessa she could have your husband?”
“Yes.”
“Hostile words?”
“Accurate words.”
Maya later told me she almost applauded.
The defense suggested I lost my balance.
Then the prosecutor replayed the video frame by frame.
Vanessa's hand extended.
My shoulder moved.
My feet left the step.
There was nothing ambiguous.
Then Ryan testified.
For the first time publicly, he admitted the affair.
The money.
The lies.
Vanessa's threats.
His silence.
When asked why he initially lied to police, he answered:
“Because I was a coward.”
I looked at him.
He didn't look back.
“Did Emily fall?” the prosecutor asked.
Ryan swallowed.
“No.”
“What happened?”
“Vanessa pushed her.”
“Did you know Vanessa had previously spoken about harming Emily?”
“Yes.”
“And you still allowed her around your wife?”
Ryan's voice broke.
“Yes.”
That was the first truly honest answer he had given in a long time.
Margaret testified under subpoena.
She claimed she never believed Vanessa would become violent.
Then prosecutors played the voicemail.
I keep thinking about how easy it would be if Emily just disappeared.
Margaret's face collapsed.
The jury heard everything.
After closing arguments, deliberations began.
I went home.
I didn't want to sit outside a courtroom waiting for strangers to decide whether what happened to me was real.
Two days later, my phone rang.
David answered.
He listened.
Then turned toward me.
“They have a verdict.”
My heart started pounding.
Before we could leave, a sharp pain hit my abdomen.
I grabbed the counter.
Maya stood.
“Emily?”
Another pain came.
Stronger.
I looked down.
May you like
Water spread across the floor.
Sophie had chosen verdict day to arrive.
