Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Opened the Door

Margaret wasn't arrested for giving Vanessa a key.
By itself, that wasn't a crime.
But investigators were now looking at whether she knowingly helped Vanessa stalk or intimidate me.
Ryan's statement gave them more.
Margaret knew Vanessa had entered our house while I was away.
She knew Vanessa had copied information from Ryan's office.
She knew Vanessa hated my pregnancy.
And after one argument, Margaret told Ryan:
“Some women aren't meant to stay in the family.”
Ryan assumed she meant divorce.
I wasn't so generous anymore.
The most devastating evidence came from Margaret's own phone.
A voicemail Vanessa had left three weeks before the fall.
“I keep thinking about how easy it would be if Emily just disappeared.”
Margaret never reported it.
Instead, she returned the call six minutes later.
The content of that call was unavailable.
But it lasted twenty-seven minutes.
Margaret claimed they discussed “emotions.”
Sure.
My daughter kicked as David told me.
Hard.
I smiled despite everything.
“She doesn't like Grandma either.”
Maya laughed.
The laugh turned into tears.
We both cried.
Not because we were defeated.
Because sometimes survival is exhausting.
Two weeks passed.
Then three.
My pregnancy stabilized.
I rented a quiet house near Maya.
I never returned to the estate alone.
Police eventually allowed me to collect my belongings.
I walked through the front door with Maya and two officers.
The house felt wrong.
The staircase outside looked smaller than I remembered.
I stood at the bottom.
One step.
Two.
Three.
I stopped.
Maya touched my arm.
“You don't have to.”
“Yes, I do.”
I climbed all twelve.
At the top, I turned around.
For weeks, that staircase had existed in my nightmares as a cliff.
Now it was stone.
Just stone.
Vanessa didn't own it.
Ryan didn't own it.
Fear didn't own it.
I went inside.
In the nursery, the crib was still assembled.
Soft gray walls.
White curtains.
A small wooden sign above the crib.
SOPHIE.
Her name.
Ryan and I had chosen it together.
I almost took the sign down.
Instead, I packed it.
Sophie was still mine.
Her name didn't belong to our broken marriage.
While packing the closet, Maya found an envelope behind a box.
“Emily?”
Inside was a handwritten note.
No date.
No signature.
But I recognized Vanessa's handwriting immediately.
You'll never build a family here.
Maya's face went white.
There was something else in the envelope.
A photograph.
Me sleeping.
In my own bed.
Taken from inside the bedroom.
And on the back, four words were written:
He sleeps beside you.
I dropped the photo.
Because the picture wasn't taken during Ryan's business trip.
The date printed in the corner showed he had been lying in bed beside me.
May you like
Meaning Vanessa had entered our bedroom...
while both of us were asleep.
