Chapter 5 - The Insurance Policy

Police took the messages seriously.
Very seriously.
Officer Brooks returned before midnight.
“Do not respond to Vanessa.”
“I won't.”
“We're sending officers to locate her.”
“What about Ryan?”
“We're speaking with him now.”
I handed over everything.
Then I asked the question I almost didn't want answered.
“Can you check the insurance policy?”
Officer Brooks nodded.
“We can look into it.”
David waited until she left.
“I'm going to help you separate financially.”
“I don't even know what I own anymore.”
“You own more than you think.”
That surprised me.
Ryan had always managed most of our investments.
Not because I was incapable.
Because I trusted him.
My biggest mistake wasn't loving Ryan.
It was believing love made paperwork unnecessary.
David helped me access accounts.
Checking.
Savings.
Brokerage.
Business holdings.
Then we found something strange.
A transfer.
$240,000.
Sent over eight months in smaller payments to a consulting company.
VHC Strategy Group.
Maya stared.
“VHC.”
I knew immediately.
“Vanessa Harper Cole.”
David searched public registration records.
The company belonged to her.
“So he wasn't just sleeping with her,” Maya said. “He was paying her.”
I felt sick.
“Maybe legitimate consulting.”
“Maybe,” David said. “But the amounts are unusual.”
Then we saw another payment.
$75,000.
Memo: Project Stone.
I stared at it.
“Project Stone?”
Maya looked toward me.
“You live in a stone estate.”
The thought was too ugly.
“No.”
David kept searching.
There were three more payments with the same memo.
Total: $180,000.
My hands began shaking.
A nurse came in to check the baby's monitor.
Strong heartbeat.
Steady.
I watched the green line.
That sound kept me from falling apart.
After the nurse left, David received an email.
His face changed.
“What?”
He turned the laptop.
“Thomas sent me something.”
A video thumbnail.
Porch camera.
Timestamped six weeks earlier.
Ryan stood outside the front door.
Vanessa beside him.
I clicked play.
Their voices were faint but clear.
Vanessa said, “You keep delaying everything.”
Ryan replied, “I'm handling it.”
“She'll never leave you.”
“She might.”
“She won't.”
Ryan rubbed his face.
“Then we'll figure out another way.”
My heart stopped.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You already did.”
The clip ended.
Maya whispered, “Another way to do what?”
I didn't answer.
There were more videos.
One showed Vanessa entering the house at 2:11 a.m. while I was visiting my mother.
Another showed Ryan handing her a folder.
Another showed them arguing.
Then we opened a clip recorded four months earlier.
The same week my insurance policy increased.
Ryan and Vanessa stood near the garage.
Vanessa said, “Five million is enough.”
Ryan glanced toward the house.
May you like
“Keep your voice down.”
And suddenly there was no innocent explanation left.
