Chapter 10 - Ryan Finally Told the Truth

Ryan asked to see me.
I said no.
Then he asked again through David.
Still no.
Then he sent a letter.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I read it.
Emily,
There is no version of this where I deserve forgiveness.
A promising start.
He admitted the affair.
The money.
The plan to leave.
He admitted Vanessa had made disturbing comments about my pregnancy.
And that he had dismissed them.
She was dramatic.
Jealous.
Angry.
Those were the excuses he gave himself.
Then came the part that made my hands shake.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had called him after borrowing my SUV.
She told Ryan:
Maybe now she'll understand how fragile everything is.
Ryan asked what she meant.
She refused to explain.
He never told me.
Never warned me.
Never checked the car himself.
He simply convinced himself she was bluffing.
I stopped reading.
Maya found me crying in the guest room.
“He knew enough,” I said.
She sat beside me.
“He knew enough to warn me.”
“Yes.”
“He knew enough to keep her away.”
“Yes.”
“He chose himself.”
Maya put her arm around me.
“Yes.”
That was the truth.
Ryan may not have plotted my death.
But every time Vanessa showed him who she was, he chose silence because telling the truth would cost him his marriage, reputation, and money.
His cowardice gave her access.
His lies gave her opportunity.
His affair gave her confidence.
And when I finally fell, his first instinct was still to protect the lie.
I finished the letter.
At the end, Ryan wrote:
The camera footage will prove what happened. I authorized police to access everything. I am cooperating fully.
Not because I'm asking you to take me back.
Because our daughter deserves at least one decent thing from me.
I folded the letter.
That afternoon, prosecutors charged Vanessa with aggravated assault and additional offenses related to the vehicle tampering.
More charges were possible.
Ryan was not charged in connection with the attack.
But his financial conduct was now under investigation.
His company board placed him on leave.
News spread quickly.
Reporters appeared outside Maya's house.
I hated them.
I hated seeing my life reduced to headlines.
PREGNANT WIFE INJURED IN LOVE TRIANGLE.
Like this was entertainment.
Like I was a character instead of a woman trying to keep her baby alive.
Then the complete porch footage was recovered.
Officer Brooks asked if I wanted to see it.
I shouldn't have.
I did.
The camera showed everything.
Me walking toward the stairs.
Vanessa following.
Me stopping.
Turning.
Speaking.
Then walking away.
Vanessa stepping forward.
Her arm extending.
Her palm striking my shoulder.
My body falling.
Clear.
Undeniable.
Then the most disturbing part.
For eleven seconds after I landed, Vanessa simply watched me.
No panic.
No shock.
No attempt to help.
Then she walked down.
Crouched beside me.
And said exactly what I remembered.
“You should've been more careful. A fall like that could end very badly.”
Eleven seconds later, Ryan came outside.
Officer Brooks paused the video.
“There's one more thing.”
“What?”
“Look at the top-right corner.”
I leaned closer.
A second figure stood behind the upstairs window.
May you like
Watching.
Someone else had been inside the house.
