Chapter 6 - The Cracking Facade

Clara held the trembling child against her chest, feeling the frantic flutter of his heartbeat slowly synchronize with her own.

She pressed her lips against his soft, sweaty hair, fighting back the burning salt behind her eyes.

"I’m here, my sweet boy," she whispered into the dark.

"Mama is right here."

Leo gripped the rough cotton of her maid’s collar with both fists, refusing to yield an inch of distance.

He did not cry out; he merely breathed her in, his small fingers digging through fabric into skin as if testing if she were real.

Then, from the hall, the heavy metallic click of a key turning in the lock shattered the sanctuary.

Clara had no time to reach the dumbwaiter.

She scooped Leo into her arms, backing into the heavy velvet drapes flanking the arched French windows.

The door swung open, casting a long rectangle of pale light across the carpet.

Julian walked in, followed by Dr. Isaac Sterling—Victoria’s uncle and the chief neurologist at the city’s premier private hospital.

"He refuses to speak, Isaac," Julian said, his voice laced with cold exhaustion.

"The board cannot see an heir who behaves like a feral invalid at tomorrow’s shareholder summit."

"The trauma of the birth and his mother’s subsequent death was bound to produce neurosis," the doctor replied smoothly, unzipping a leather medical bag.

"A mild sedative in his morning juice will keep him compliant during the press conference."

Julian leaned against the bedpost, rubbing his temples.

"I don't want him drooling for the cameras."

"Just docile enough to let Victoria hold his hand without him thrashing like a drowned cat."

Behind the heavy velvet curtain, Clara felt Leo’s small body go rigid again.

She held her hand gently over his mouth, her own pulse roaring in her ears.

The cold arrogance of these men—treating a traumatized four-year-old child like livestock to secure a corporate merger—hardened something fragile inside her into diamond.

She would not board the five o'clock train to Chicago.

She would tear this entire golden dynasty down to the bedrock before she let them inject poison into her son’s veins.
