Chapter 15 - The Gala of Reckoning

Three days later, the annual Vance Foundation Gala was held at the Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Manhattan.
The event was supposed to celebrate the merger between the Vance conglomerate and the Sterling pharmaceutical empire.
Instead, it became a public execution of the old guard.
Arthur Vance stood at the podium in the center of the gilded ballroom, addressing four hundred executives, foreign investors, and journalists.
"For four years, this company’s leadership was corrupted by deceit, forgery, and domestic abuse," Arthur’s voice thundered through the sound system.
"Today, the board of trustees has voted unanimously to terminate Julian Vance from all administrative roles and strip him of all voting shares."
A murmur of stunned awe swept through the crowd.
"Furthermore," Arthur continued, gesturing toward the double oak doors at the back of the hall, "we are restoring the original charter."
The heavy doors opened.
Clara walked into the grand ballroom.
She wore a simple, elegant navy wool dress, with no lavish jewels, no diamonds, and no artificial arrogance.
Walking beside her, holding her hand firmly, was Leo.
The little boy was dressed in a comfortable navy cardigan and trousers, his cheeks flushed with healthy color, his head held high.
There was no trembling, no terror, and no hysterical crying.
He looked at the sea of flashing cameras and wealthy onlookers without fear, his small hand anchored to his mother’s warm fingers.
The entire room stood up in an involuntary standing ovation, the sound of applause echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

At the front row, several members of the Sterling family sat in humiliated silence, their faces as pale as parchment as federal agents stood quietly at the perimeter of the room waiting to execute arrest warrants.
Clara did not smile for the cameras; she merely walked forward with the dignity of a woman who had walked through the valley of death to reclaim what was hers.
