Chapter 17 - Ashes of the Vance Dynasty

Two months later, the probate court in New Orleans finalized the legal restoration of Sarah Evans’s identity and rights.
The judge struck down every forged document, expunged the fraudulent psychiatric committal, and declared Clara the sole legal guardian and conservator of Leo’s generational trust.
Sitting in the quiet courtroom, Clara listened as the judge banged the gavel, sealing the record forever.
Leo sat beside her, drawing colored pictures of a sunny coastline on a legal pad with yellow crayons.
Arthur Vance walked up to them after the hearing, leaning heavily on his walking cane.
"You have enough wealth under this trust to buy islands, Sarah," the old man said with a faint, weary smile.
"What will you do with it?"
Clara looked down at her son, who held up his drawing of a small wooden cottage with blue waves in front of it.
"I’m leaving this city, Arthur."
"I’m establishing a foundation for mothers who were silenced and stripped of their children by abusive men with money."
"And the rest of the fortune will remain locked until Leo is twenty-five, so he never believes his value comes from a bank ledger."
Arthur nodded slowly, his eyes showing genuine respect for the woman his nephew had tried to destroy.
"My brother would have been proud to call you a daughter."
"Take care of the boy, Sarah."
"He has your eyes—and your spine."
Mrs. Gable waited outside the courtroom in a sensible linen coat, carrying Leo’s favorite soft teddy bear.

The dark shadow of the Vance mansion had finally dissolved into dust.
