Chapter 12 - Bloodline and Betrayal

The grand foyer erupted into chaos.

Choking on chemical powder and blinded by the dense white cloud, the guards stumbled backward, coughing violently.

Clara charged down the stairs, skipping steps, her eyes locked on the heavy service exit behind the dining hall.

Julian fired a wild shot into the smoke; the bullet chipped the marble balustrade an inch from Clara’s shoulder, showering her in stone dust.

She didn't stop.

She burst through the dining hall doors, kicking through the mahogany service entrance that led out to the delivery bay.

The freezing morning air hit her like a bucket of ice water, clearing her lungs.

Parked in the loading bay was not a servant’s van, but a long black town car bearing the official seal of the Vance Family Trust.

The rear window rolled down, revealing an elderly man with silver hair and piercing gray eyes identical to Julian’s.

It was Arthur Vance—Julian’s uncle and the supreme chairman of the family trust.

"Get in, Sarah," the old man commanded, his voice cold as iron.

Clara hesitated for a split second, shielding Leo with her body.

"How do I know you won't bury me like he did?"

Arthur opened the rear door himself, stepping out with a silver-tipped walking cane.

"Because my brother built this empire on honor, not child sacrifice."

"And because Martha Gable called me three hours ago with the financial audit Julian tried to shred."

He looked down at Leo’s pale, shivering face, his old eyes softening with genuine grief.

"My great-nephew needs oxygen."

"Get in the car before my nephew destroys what little dignity this name has left."

Behind them, the loading bay doors crashed open.

Julian emerged into the gray morning light, his suit disheveled, the revolver hanging limply at his side as he saw his uncle standing beside the town car.

The game had shifted from a private cover-up to an internal execution.
