Chapter 18 - Morning Light

A small wooden porch overlooked the gentle, rolling waves of the Carolina coastline.

The salty morning breeze carried the clean scent of pine needles and tidal sea air.

Leo ran across the sandy dunes, chasing a golden retriever puppy that barked happily at the incoming foam.

His laughter rang out clear and bright, untainted by the ghosts of locked nursery doors and marble ballrooms.

Clara sat on the wooden steps of the beach cottage, a mug of black coffee warm between her hands.

She wore a simple cotton sweater and faded jeans, her hair blowing free in the Atlantic wind.

There were no security cameras, no iron gates, and no armed guards patrolling the perimeter.

Only the rhythmic, eternal sound of the sea washing away the footprints on the sand.

Leo stopped running, turned around, and sprinted back up the dune toward the porch.

He threw his arms around her neck, sandy and out of breath, grinning from ear to ear.

"Look, Mama!" he cried, pointing toward the horizon where the sun was breaking through the pink clouds.

"The sun came back!"

Clara wrapped her arms around him, burying her face into his warm, salty cheek.

She felt his steady, strong heartbeat against her chest, beating in perfect harmony with the rising tide.

"Yes, it did, baby," Clara whispered softly into his hair.

"The morning came back, and nobody is ever going to take it away from us again."
