Chapter 9 - The Price of Silence

The photograph changed everything.
Daniel wanted police involved immediately.
Marcus agreed.
Claire did not.
"If whoever has Emily finds out we're talking to police, what happens to her?"
Daniel stared at the image.
Emily looked tired.
But she did not appear visibly injured.
The motel room contained a lamp, floral curtain, and numbered key tag on the table.
Room 27.
Marcus photographed every detail.
"The picture may not have been taken against her will."
Claire looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means we don't know if she's being held."
Daniel examined Emily's expression.
He had known every version of her face when they were young.
Angry.
Sarcastic.
Afraid.
Happy.
The look in the photograph was controlled.
Emily was performing calm.
Daniel noticed her right hand.
Two fingers rested against her wrist.
He remembered something.
When they were twenty, they had developed a stupid signal during dinners with Daniel's father.
Two fingers against the wrist meant:
Someone is listening.
Daniel stood.
"She's telling us something."
"What?" Claire asked.
"She's not alone."
Marcus zoomed in.
There was another detail.
A reflection inside the metal lamp base.
Part of a sign.
Red letters.
Daniel could make out three.
WAY.
Marcus searched motel names within two hundred miles.
Twenty-seven possibilities became six.
Only one used red signage.
Gateway Motor Lodge.
Forty miles north.
Daniel, Marcus, and two trusted private security officers drove there.
Claire insisted on coming.
Daniel said no.
She came anyway.
He was beginning to understand where Noah inherited his stubbornness.
The motel manager recognized Emily.
"Checked in three nights ago."
"Alone?"
"At first."
"At first?"
"A man came later."
"Description?"
"Sixties."
"Gray hair."
"Expensive coat."
Daniel's face tightened.
Richard.
"What room?"
"Twenty-seven."
Empty.
Sheets removed.
Trash discarded.
But Daniel noticed something beneath the bed.
A torn piece of paper.
He pulled it free.
Part of an accounting ledger.
Mercer Foundation.
October 2007.
Marcus stared.
"She left it intentionally."
Daniel agreed.
A number was circled.
$2,400,000.
Recipient:
Alden Family Placement Services.
Claire whispered, "Two point four million dollars?"
Daniel felt sick.
"That wasn't an adoption fee."
"What was it?"
"Payment for silence."
Marcus examined another notation.
Approved by R.M.
Richard Mercer.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
"My entire life started with someone writing a check."
Daniel crouched in front of her.
"No."
She looked at him.
"Your life started because your mother refused to stop loving you."
Claire's eyes filled.
"And because Susan and Robert did."
Daniel hesitated.
"And because I loved you before I knew what color your eyes were."
Claire looked away.
She was not ready for that.
Daniel understood.
His phone rang.
Richard.
He answered.
"Where is Emily?"
Richard sighed.
"You always were impatient."
"Where is she?"
"Safe."
Daniel's body went cold.
Claire heard.
Marcus began recording.
"If you've hurt her—"
"I haven't."
"Then let me speak to her."
A pause.
Then Emily's voice.
"Daniel."
For twenty years he had imagined hearing it again.
Not in dreams.
Not in memory.
Real.
Older.
Tired.
Still hers.
"Emily."
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel could barely breathe.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Are you free to leave?"
Silence.
That was enough.
Richard returned to the line.
"Here's what happens next."
Daniel's voice changed.
Colder.
"You don't get to dictate anything."
"I've been dictating your life longer than you realize."
Daniel stared at the torn ledger.
"What do you want?"
"You withdraw any claim on the Olivia Mercer Trust."
Claire looked at him.
"And?"
"You publicly state Emily Reed fabricated the adoption accusations in an attempt to obtain money."
"No."
"Think carefully."
"I did."
"Daniel—"
"No."
Richard's voice hardened.
"You don't understand what your father built."
"I understand exactly what he destroyed."
"Thomas protected you."
"He stole my daughter."
"He protected the Mercer name."
Daniel laughed.
A humorless sound.
"There it is."
Richard went silent.
"The name."
Daniel continued.
"You took a baby."
"You destroyed Emily's life."
"You let me mourn a child who was alive."
"And you still think this is about the Mercer name."
Richard's breathing became audible.
"You are emotional."
"Yes."
That word surprised Richard.
Daniel Mercer had spent his adult life pretending emotion was weakness.
Not anymore.
"I am extremely emotional."
Daniel looked at Claire.
"And that's why you should be afraid."
Richard disconnected.
Claire stared at him.
"What now?"
Daniel handed the torn ledger page to Marcus.
"Now we find the original books."
"Where?"
Daniel remembered Emily's letter.
Mercer Foundation ledgers.
2007.
Not digital.
Physical.
Then he remembered a room beneath the old family offices.
An archive his father had sealed years ago.
"The Mercer House."
Claire frowned.
"What's that?"
"The place where my family keeps everything it doesn't want anyone to see."
Daniel headed for the door.
Claire followed.
Behind them, Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
Then stopped walking.
"Daniel."
"What?"
Marcus looked pale.
"Margaret just called."
Daniel's chest tightened.
"Noah?"
"He's fine."
"Then what?"
Marcus swallowed.
May you like
"Emily is at the house."
