Chapter 17 - Room 314

Richard was arrested two days later.
The charges were initially financial.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Falsification of trust documents.
Witness intimidation remained under investigation.
The case surrounding Claire's adoption was more complicated because two decades had passed.
But investigators had the original records.
Ruth's testimony.
Pike's confession.
Thomas's letter.
And Richard's recordings.
The public scandal grew.
Daniel resigned temporarily from every Mercer Holdings position.
The board begged him not to.
He did anyway.
"I spent twenty years benefiting from a system I never examined," he told them.
"I need to know what else is buried under this company."
Claire heard the statement.
"You didn't know."
Daniel looked at her.
"Not knowing doesn't automatically make someone innocent."
Emily watched him carefully.
He had changed.
Or perhaps pieces of the younger Daniel were returning.
The final mystery was Unit 314.
Not the storage unit.
The hospital room.
Emily had given birth in Room 314.
The number appearing on the storage receipt had not been accidental.
She chose it deliberately.
St. Matthew's agreed to let the family visit before the old maternity wing was demolished.
Daniel almost refused.
Emily wanted to go.
Claire surprised everyone.
"So do I."
The room was smaller than Daniel remembered.
Faded walls.
Removed medical equipment.
One narrow window.
Daniel stood where the bed had been.
Emily touched the wall.
"This was it."
Claire looked around.
"This is where I was born?"
"Yes."
Emily smiled through tears.
"You were loud."
Daniel laughed.
"Extremely."
Claire smiled.
"Good."
Noah walked around pretending not to be emotional.
Then he noticed scratches beneath the windowsill.
Letters.
D + E.
Daniel stared.
Emily laughed.
"You did that?"
"You told me to."
"No."
"You dared me."
"That's different."
Claire shook her head.
"You two were children."
"We were twenty."
"Exactly."
For a few minutes, the room held something none of them expected.
Warmth.
Not tragedy.
Memory.
Emily described the way Daniel panicked when a nurse asked him to cut the umbilical cord.
Daniel described Emily threatening to throw a water cup at him during labor.
Claire laughed.
Noah laughed harder.
Then Emily became quiet.
"I want you to know something."
Claire looked at her.
"When they took you out of this room, I heard you crying."
"I knew you were alive."
"Everyone told me I was confused."
"Drugged."
"Grieving."
"For years, I wondered if maybe they were right."
Claire took her hand.
"You were right."
Emily's face crumpled.
Claire hugged her.
The first hug.
Emily held her carefully at first.
Then tightly.
Daniel turned toward the window.
He wanted to give them privacy.
Claire reached one hand toward him.
Daniel stared.
Then stepped closer.
The three of them stood together in the room where their family had been broken.
Noah joined because eight-year-olds rarely respect symbolic boundaries.
"Move."
Claire laughed through tears.
She pulled him in.
Four people.
Not the family that should have existed.
Something new.
Something strange.
Something real.
Before leaving, Daniel noticed a metal plate beneath the windowsill.
Loose.
He removed it.
Behind it was nothing dramatic.
No documents.
No hidden recording.
Only an old hospital sticker.
BABY GIRL MERCER.
Daniel handed it to Claire.
She stared at it.
Then tucked it carefully into her wallet.
"I think I'll keep this."
Daniel nodded.
Outside, reporters waited beyond the property line.
Claire looked nervous.
Daniel asked, "Ready?"
"No."
Emily smiled.
"Good answer."
They walked out together.
A reporter shouted.
"Claire, will you change your name to Mercer?"
She stopped.
Daniel did not know what she would say.
Claire looked toward Susan and Robert waiting near the car.
Then at Emily.
Then Daniel.
"No."
Cameras clicked.
"My parents gave me the name Alden."
"I'm keeping it."
She looked at Daniel.
He smiled.
Then she continued.
"But Daniel Mercer is my father."
Daniel's eyes filled.
"And Emily Reed is my mother."
Emily cried openly.
"And I have a little brother who throws rocks at expensive cars."
Noah raised his hand.
"Only when necessary."
Reporters laughed.
The clip went viral within hours.
But what mattered to Daniel was not the cameras.
It was the word.
Father.
For twenty years, he believed it had been taken from him permanently.
May you like
Claire had just returned it.
