Chapter 12 - Forty-Seven Minutes

Daniel had spent his life around money.

He knew how quickly it moved.

Forty-seven minutes was enough time to transfer a fortune across three countries.

It was also enough time to stop one, if the right person acted.

Richard was trustee.

Daniel was not.

Claire, however, was the beneficiary.

If they could legally establish that Claire Alden was Olivia Mercer before the transfer cleared, the bank could freeze the account.

They needed proof.

Birth records were falsified.

Adoption records sealed.

Ruth's testimony helped.

The bracelet helped.

The photograph helped.

None were immediate legal identification.

A DNA test would.

But not in forty-seven minutes.

Unless Daniel used the one advantage Richard had underestimated.

Money could buy speed.

Not truth.

Speed.

Daniel called Dr. Elena Walsh, director of a private genetics laboratory Mercer Foundation had funded for pediatric research.

"I need an emergency kinship test."

"How emergency?"

"Thirty minutes."

She laughed.

Then realized Daniel was serious.

"You know that's ridiculous."

"I know."

"Legal chain of custody takes longer."

"I need preliminary confirmation first."

"Daniel—"

"A woman's life and four hundred million dollars may depend on it."

Silence.

"Come now."

They did.

Swabs.

Forms.

Signatures.

Claire's hands shook slightly.

Daniel's did too.

Emily watched.

"You okay?" Daniel asked Claire.

"No."

"Me neither."

That seemed to help.

While the lab processed the rapid markers, Marcus attacked the financial side.

He contacted the trust bank's compliance office.

They refused to freeze the transfer based solely on allegations.

Daniel expected that.

Then Emily remembered something.

"Thomas's trust required two conditions before principal could be moved."

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"I saw a copy."

"Where?"

"Richard showed it to me when he paid me."

"What conditions?"

"The beneficiary had to be legally declared deceased."

Everyone went silent.

Daniel understood.

Claire was already legally dead.

The forged certificate had been created for exactly that purpose.

Richard could claim the beneficiary was dead and move remaining assets according to the trust's successor clause.

"What's the second condition?" Marcus asked.

Emily frowned.

"Approval from the Mercer Foundation chairman."

Richard held that position temporarily.

Tomorrow's board vote would make it permanent.

But he was acting now.

Daniel looked at the clock.

Twenty-eight minutes.

The laboratory door opened.

Dr. Walsh carried a preliminary report.

Her expression had changed.

"Daniel."

He stood.

"The markers are strongly consistent."

Claire stopped breathing.

"Meaning?"

Dr. Walsh looked at her gently.

"Based on the rapid panel, there is an extremely high probability that Mr. Mercer is your biological father."

Claire stared at Daniel.

He stared back.

No celebration.

No dramatic embrace.

Only truth.

After twenty years.

Truth.

Emily began crying.

Daniel reached for Claire, then stopped.

He would not assume permission.

Claire noticed.

After several seconds, she stepped forward.

Not into a hug.

But close.

She took his hand.

Daniel's eyes closed.

It was enough.

Marcus photographed the report and sent it to compliance.

The bank froze the transfer pending review.

Twelve minutes remaining.

Richard called.

Daniel answered.

"You froze it."

"Yes."

"Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"Found my daughter."

"You're destroying Mercer Holdings."

"No."

"I'm separating it from you."

Richard shouted now.

"That trust has been supporting company liquidity for fifteen years!"

There.

The admission.

Marcus's recorder captured every word.

Daniel looked at Emily.

She heard it too.

Richard continued.

"Your father designed it that way."

"My father stole from his granddaughter?"

"He protected his company."

"With her money."

"She would never have known."

Claire stepped toward the phone.

"But I know now."

Silence.

Richard whispered, "Claire."

"My name is Claire Alden."

Her voice was steady.

"And whatever name I was born with, you don't get to use it like you know me."

Richard disconnected.

Dr. Walsh exhaled.

"I assume this is not a normal family reunion."

"No," Daniel said.

Emily almost laughed.

"No."

Daniel looked at Claire.

She still held his hand.

Then Marcus's phone buzzed.

The board had issued another statement.

Richard accused Daniel of manipulating a young woman into a fraudulent paternity claim to seize control of a family trust.

Claire read it.

Her face hardened.

"He thinks I'm fake."

Daniel said nothing.

She handed back the phone.

"Good."

Emily frowned.

"Good?"

Claire nodded.

"If he wants everybody watching, let's make sure they see everything."

Daniel studied her.

There was Mercer stubbornness.

Emily courage.

And nineteen years of Alden decency.

Richard had made a serious mistake.

He had assumed Claire was a piece on a board.

She was not.

May you like

She was a player.
