Chapter 14 - The Man Who Signed the Papers

Leonard Pike was seventy-four.
For seventeen years, he had lived under his middle name in a retirement community two states away.
Marcus found him before midnight.
Travel records showed something else.
Pike had returned to the city four times in the last six months.
The most recent trip began nine days ago.
He had not left.
Emily sat at Daniel's dining table surrounded by old documents.
"Why now?"
Claire answered.
"Because Mom found me."
Emily looked at her.
Claire hesitated after saying Mom.
Susan was still Mom.
Emily was also becoming something.
Neither woman pushed the word.
Daniel studied Pike's financial records.
Regular deposits came from a consulting company.
The company traced to Richard.
Richard had been paying Pike for twenty years.
Silence had a salary.
Marcus located Pike at a small hotel near the airport.
Police were now involved officially.
Daniel had provided the threatening photographs, recorded calls, trust irregularities, and evidence of Emily being prevented from leaving the motel.
Detective Angela Shaw agreed there was enough to investigate.
But Richard's lawyers were already creating distance.
They claimed any actions were taken without Richard's knowledge.
Pike could become the scapegoat.
Daniel wanted him alive, talking, and frightened enough to tell the truth.
Police arrested Pike the following morning on an outstanding fraud warrant connected to a different case.
Shaw interviewed him.
For three hours, he denied everything.
Then investigators showed him Ruth's recording.
They showed him the forged death certificate.
They showed him trust payments.
Pike asked for a lawyer.
Daniel waited outside.
Emily sat beside him.
"Twenty years ago, I would have broken that door down."
Daniel smiled slightly.
"Twenty years ago, you weighed about a hundred and fifteen pounds."
"I still would have tried."
"I know."
They sat in silence.
Daniel looked at her.
"Did you ever think about finding me?"
"All the time."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because every time I saw you in the news, you looked exactly like your father."
That hurt.
Emily noticed.
"I don't mean physically."
"Worse."
"You became Mercer Holdings."
"Yes."
"I thought you'd chosen them."
"I thought you'd chosen money."
"We were both very wrong."
Daniel nodded.
Then Emily asked, "Why didn't you marry?"
He looked at the floor.
"You really want the answer?"
"Maybe."
"I got close once."
"What happened?"
"She asked me why there was a locked drawer in my bedroom."
Emily knew.
"The baby things?"
Daniel nodded.
A hospital cap.
One ultrasound photograph.
A tiny pair of socks Emily bought.
The copy of Olivia's birth certificate issued before the false death certificate replaced it.
"I couldn't throw them away."
Emily whispered, "Neither could I."
The interview-room door opened.
Detective Shaw appeared.
"Pike wants to make a deal."
Daniel stood.
"What did he say?"
"He admits helping falsify hospital records."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Richard?"
"Claims Richard arranged payment."
Daniel asked, "And Thomas?"
"Ordered the adoption."
No surprise.
Shaw continued.
"But Pike says Richard didn't take Emily from the train station."
Daniel frowned.
"Then who did?"
"Pike did."
Emily stood.
"What?"
Pike claimed he followed Emily after learning she had visited Ruth.
He confronted her at the station.
He told her Richard intended to frame her for trust fraud.
Emily agreed to go with him because Pike promised evidence.
At the motel, he took her phone.
He said he was protecting himself.
Then Richard discovered them and took control.
Messy.
Cowardly.
Believable.
"Why send the photograph?" Daniel asked.
"Pike says Richard ordered it."
Shaw paused.
"And Pike says there's one piece of evidence Richard doesn't know survived."
"What?"
"The original adoption agreement."
Emily's face changed.
"I thought it was destroyed."
"Apparently Pike kept it."
"Where?"
Shaw looked at Daniel.
"Inside a safe-deposit box."
"Bank?"
"No."
Shaw almost smiled.
"St. Matthew's."
The abandoned hospital wing had a private vault once used for controlled medical records.
Pike had hidden documents behind a false panel.
A search warrant was obtained.
Inside the vault investigators found the original agreement.
Emily's signature was clearly forged.
Thomas Mercer's signature was real.
Richard's signature appeared as witness.
And Leonard Pike's appeared beneath a payment authorization.
But that was not the biggest discovery.
Attached was a handwritten condition from Thomas.
OLIVIA IS NEVER TO BE TOLD OF HER BIOLOGICAL PARENTS WHILE I AM ALIVE.
Claire read it twice.
Then she said quietly, "He didn't just give me away."
"He made sure I couldn't come back."
Daniel felt rage rise.
Claire folded the page carefully.
But on the back was another note.
Added thirteen years later.
Different handwriting.
Richard's.
IF EMILY CARTER LOCATES THE GIRL, ACTIVATE THE DEATH CERTIFICATE AND TRANSFER TRUST ASSETS IMMEDIATELY.
Daniel looked at Shaw.
"Is that enough?"
"For fraud?"
"Forgery?"
"Conspiracy?"
"Probably."
"For everything?"
"Not yet."
Richard would argue the note referred to legitimate contingency planning.
His lawyers would bury investigators in explanations.
Daniel understood that world.
Proof mattered.
But perception mattered too.
Richard planned a press conference that afternoon.
He intended to announce Daniel's permanent removal.
Claire watched the news report.
Then she turned to Daniel.
"Can I go?"
"Where?"
"His press conference."
Emily immediately said, "Absolutely not."
Claire smiled.
"Now I know where he gets it."
Daniel almost laughed.
Claire continued.
"Richard keeps telling the world who I am."
"A fraud."
"A confused student."
"A tool you're using."
She held up the original adoption agreement.
"Maybe it's time I told them myself."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Nineteen years old.
Thrown into a family war she never asked for.
She was afraid.
He could see it.
But courage was not the absence of fear.
Emily had taught him that once.
Claire apparently inherited the lesson.
Daniel nodded.
May you like
"We go together."
