Chapter 10 - Emily Comes Home

Daniel did not remember the drive home.

He remembered traffic lights.

Claire asking him twice to slow down.

Marcus making calls.

But mostly he remembered one sentence.

Emily is at the house.

When the SUV stopped, Daniel got out before the engine fully settled.

The front door opened.

Margaret stood inside.

Behind her was a woman Daniel had last seen at twenty-one.

For one impossible second, time collapsed.

Emily.

Thirty-nine now.

Dark hair shorter.

Fine lines near her eyes.

A bruise-colored shadow of exhaustion beneath them.

Older.

Different.

Exactly the same.

She stared at him.

Neither moved.

Noah broke the silence.

"Mom!"

He ran across the foyer.

Emily dropped to her knees.

She caught him with both arms.

The sound she made was half laugh, half sob.

Noah buried his face against her neck.

"You left."

"I know."

"You said you'd come back."

"I tried."

"You scared me."

"I know, baby."

He began crying harder.

Emily held him.

Daniel turned away slightly.

This reunion was not his.

Claire stood near the doorway.

Emily saw her.

Everything stopped again.

Noah followed his mother's gaze.

"That's Claire."

Emily stood slowly.

Claire did not move.

Two decades of grief stood ten feet apart.

Emily whispered, "Hi."

Claire's chin trembled.

"You're Emily."

Emily nodded.

"I am."

"My mother."

Another nod.

"Biologically."

Claire looked toward Susan, who had arrived behind them with Robert.

Emily corrected herself immediately.

"Your first mother."

Her eyes went to Susan.

"But not your only one."

Susan began crying.

Claire looked between the two women.

Then back at Emily.

"You knew where I was."

"For three months."

"Why didn't you talk to me?"

Emily pressed a hand over her mouth.

"Because I was terrified."

"Of Richard?"

"Of ruining your life."

Claire stared at her.

"You thought showing up would ruin my life?"

"I didn't know."

Emily's voice cracked.

"You had parents who loved you."

"You were in college."

"You looked happy."

"I spent nineteen years trying to find you."

"Then I found you and suddenly the thing I wanted most became the thing I was most afraid to touch."

Claire wiped her face.

"That's not fair."

"No."

Emily nodded.

"It isn't."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Claire took one step forward.

Emily did too.

They did not hug.

Not yet.

But they stood close enough to see each other clearly.

Daniel watched.

Then Emily finally looked at him.

"Daniel."

He had imagined this moment a thousand ways.

Anger.

Accusations.

Maybe even an embrace.

What came out was simpler.

"I'm sorry."

Emily closed her eyes.

"So am I."

"You wrote to me."

"For years."

"I never received them."

"I know that now."

"I thought you took money."

"I thought you left me."

Daniel looked down.

"My father."

"Your father."

"Richard."

"Richard."

Twenty years summarized in two names.

Daniel wanted to ask a hundred questions.

One came first.

"How did you get away?"

Emily sat with Noah beside her.

She had gone to Bellhaven.

Ruth gave her the cassette.

On the return trip, Richard called.

He told her he knew she had found Claire.

He asked to meet.

Emily agreed because she believed she could get him to admit something.

"At the Gateway Motel?"

She nodded.

"I wasn't kidnapped."

Daniel stared.

"The photograph—"

"I was prevented from leaving."

"That's kidnapping."

"I know."

"Why didn't you call police?"

"Richard had two men outside."

"How did you escape?"

Emily almost smiled.

"Fire alarm."

Noah looked impressed.

"You pulled it?"

"No."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"I burned toast."

Despite everything, Daniel laughed.

The sound surprised everyone.

For one tiny moment, the old Emily appeared.

The girl who once used sarcasm whenever life became unbearable.

Then her expression hardened.

"Richard has been stealing from Claire's trust for years."

"We found the ledger page."

"That's not enough."

"What is?"

Emily looked toward Margaret.

"The original foundation books."

Daniel nodded.

"The Mercer House archives."

Emily's face tightened.

"You know where?"

"Yes."

"Then we have to go before Richard destroys them."

Marcus stepped closer.

"He's already moving."

He showed Daniel security footage from the old Mercer House.

A maintenance truck had arrived thirty minutes earlier.

Two men were carrying archive boxes toward the rear entrance.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Emily stood.

"I'm coming."

"No."

She stared at him.

Twenty years vanished.

"Do not start."

Daniel stopped.

Emily pointed toward him.

"You do not get to reappear after two decades and immediately tell me where I can go."

Claire almost smiled.

Noah definitely smiled.

Daniel exhaled.

"Fine."

Emily picked up her coat.

"But Noah stays."

Noah opened his mouth.

Both adults said, "No."

He crossed his arms.

"This family is annoying."

Claire laughed.

It was the first natural laugh Daniel had heard from her.

Emily looked at Claire.

Claire looked at Emily.

The laughter disappeared, replaced by something quieter.

Recognition.

Connection.

A beginning.

Daniel, Emily, Marcus, and Claire left for Mercer House.

As they reached the driveway, Margaret called after Daniel.

He turned.

She held an envelope.

"This came while you were gone."

"From whom?"

"No return address."

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of an old death certificate.

Olivia Rose Mercer.

Date of death:

September 13, 2007.

Cause:

Respiratory failure.

Physician signature:

Dr. Samuel Greene.

Emily stared.

"That's the document they showed me."

Daniel examined the signature.

"What's the problem?"

Emily pointed at the date.

"Dr. Greene wasn't at St. Matthew's that day."

"How do you know?"

"Because he died three weeks before Claire was born."

Daniel looked at Marcus.

The fake death certificate had been signed by a dead doctor.

And someone had just sent them proof.

May you like

Which meant another person had known the truth for twenty years.
