Chapter 19 - THE LAST PERSON DANTE EXPECTED

Henrique’s room was empty.
Medical bag gone.
Passport gone.
Car missing.
Dante felt betrayed in a different way.
Henrique had saved his leg.
Helped expose Rafael.
Treated Elias.
Protected Sofia.
Or seemed to.
Bruno traced the surveillance account.
Created six years earlier.
Henrique’s credentials.
But the login locations were wrong.
Massachusetts.
Argentina.
Portugal.
Henrique could not have been in all places.
Dante stopped.
“Identity theft.”
Bruno nodded.
“Maybe.”
They found Henrique six hours later.
Not fleeing.
Unconscious in the trunk of his own car.
Adrian had taken him.
He woke in the hospital.
Confused.
Dante stood beside the bed.
“Someone used your account.”
Henrique looked horrified.
“What account?”
“Voss surveillance.”
Henrique shut his eyes.
“I know who.”
Dante waited.
“My brother.”
Bruno nearly laughed.
“Everyone has secret family now.”
Henrique ignored him.
“Lucas Alves.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he do?”
“He founded the early Voss software.”
Dante stared.
“The monitoring system.”
“Yes.”
“Why use your identity?”
“Because I had medical licensing.”
Henrique looked ashamed.
“I let him use my credentials years ago.”
“For money?”
“For access.”
“To patients?”
“To research networks.”
Dante felt the final structure forming.
Lucas Alves had designed the system.
Rosa funded it.
Alejandro exploited the conflict.
Adrian carried out operations.
Rafael manipulated the brace.
Victor sought power but also resisted Rosa.
Everyone guilty in different proportions.
But who kept watching Sofia?
Lucas.
Why?
Bruno found his location.
An apartment near Sofia’s old daycare.
They entered.
Empty.
Walls covered in photographs.
Sofia.
Dante.
Elena.
Mateo.
Isabela.
And one photograph of Mateo’s crash.
Dante stared.
Mateo had not died accidentally.
Lucas had been involved.
Isabela found a notebook.
Pages of genetic records.
Sofia’s medical history.
Blood samples.
Developmental scores.
Dante’s stomach turned.
“This isn’t about inheritance.”
Henrique read the pages.
“No.”
“What then?”
Henrique looked horrified.
“Neurological response.”
“What?”
“Sofia’s pattern recognition.”
Dante remembered the wooden gear.
The brace.
Her ability to notice mechanical inconsistencies.
Henrique continued.
“Lucas believed certain neurological traits ran in the Montenegro line.”
Elena looked at the notes.
“My father Alejandro had exceptional spatial reasoning.”
“So?”
“Lucas turned the family into a research cohort.”
Dante stared.
Without permission.
Across generations.
Medical surveillance disguised inside security and rehabilitation.
Rosa used Voss for control.
Lucas used Rosa for data.
That was the deepest betrayal.
Nobody had controlled the whole conspiracy.
They had layered their ambitions on top of one another.
Dante looked at the final page.
One upcoming appointment.
Subject: S.M.
Sofia Montenegro.
Location:
St. Anne Pediatric Center.
Tomorrow.
But Sofia had no appointment there.
It was a plan.
Lucas intended to take her.
Dante went home.
Isabela packed immediately.
“We leave.”
Dante nodded.
“Tonight.”
She looked surprised.
“You agree?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not going to lock us inside the mansion?”
“No.”
Dante looked around the house.
“This place has failed both of you enough.”
They prepared a decoy convoy.
Sofia traveled in a different vehicle.
No tracking electronics.
No standard route.
Halfway to the safe house, Sofia looked out the window.
Then said:
“Mommy.”
Isabela turned.
“What?”
“That car.”
A gray sedan followed two vehicles back.
Bruno checked.
Changed lanes.
The sedan changed.
Again.
Dante’s voice hardened.
“Lucas.”
They led him toward an industrial district.
Then boxed the sedan between security vehicles.
Lucas exited.
Hands raised.
No weapon.
Dante approached.
“You’ve been watching my family.”
Lucas smiled.
“Your family has been watching itself for decades.”
“You killed Mateo?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Rosa.”
Dante’s expression changed.
Lucas continued.
“Mateo discovered Sofia’s existence.”
“His own daughter.”
“Yes.”
“He was coming for them.”
Dante looked at Isabela.
She was crying silently.
Lucas smiled.
“Rosa couldn’t allow Victor’s son to control the child.”
Dante wanted to kill him.
Instead he asked:
“What do you want with Sofia?”
Lucas looked at the little girl through the armored window.
“Nothing.”
Dante stared.
“That’s a lie.”
“No.”
Lucas smiled strangely.
“She already gave me what I needed.”
Henrique stepped forward.
“What?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
Lucas looked at Dante.
“That the Montenegro trait is real.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“You experimented on children for pattern recognition?”
“Not only pattern recognition.”
“What else?”
“Threat detection.”
Silence.
Lucas continued.
“Sofia notices inconsistencies before adults.”
The brace.
The disguised men.
The pathways.
The voices.
Dante understood why Lucas had watched.
He considered her a successful result.
Not a child.
A data point.
Dante stepped closer.
“You’ll never see her again.”
Lucas smiled.
“That isn’t your decision.”
Then a red laser appeared on Dante’s chest.
Sniper.
Bruno shouted.
Everyone moved.
A shot cracked.
Lucas fell.
Bullet through his neck.
Dead before he hit the ground.
Dante stared toward a rooftop.
The sniper escaped.
On Lucas’s phone was one final message.
THANK YOU FOR CLEANING UP THE FAMILY.
Dante read it.
Unknown sender.
One conspiracy was dead.
But someone had used Dante to eliminate every participant.
Rosa.
Alejandro.
Adrian.
Lucas.
Victor compromised.
Elena exposed.
Dante weakened.
Someone had benefited from the entire collapse.
Bruno looked at him.
“Who’s left?”
Dante slowly turned toward Isabela.
Not accusing her.
Thinking.
Who had access from the beginning?
Who knew family secrets?
Who moved between countries?
Who had protected Elena?
Who had trained Isabela?
Who had appeared whenever information was needed?
Dante whispered one name.
May you like
“Elias.”
