Chapter 11 - THE CHILD WHO LEFT HER OWN CLUE

Isabela broke.
For six seconds.
Then she became something else.
Focused.
Cold.
Dangerous.
Dante watched her pick up Sofia’s wooden toy from the floor.
The little mechanism was missing.
“The piece.”
“What?”
“She took it.”
Dante understood.
The small wooden gear Sofia had used to compare with his brace.
“She carries it when she’s scared?”
“Yes.”
Isabela looked at the open window.
“She knows we’ll look for it.”
Bruno searched the room.
No forced entry.
The kidnappers had used internal access again.
Dante was done pretending the estate could be trusted.
“Evacuate everyone.”
Bruno stared.
“Everyone?”
“Staff, relatives, guests.”
“What about security?”
“Especially security.”
Within an hour, only six people remained.
Dante.
Bruno.
Henrique.
Isabela.
Rosa.
Camila.
Everyone else was removed and held for questioning by Dante’s external team.
Dante looked at the empty halls.
For the first time, the mansion felt honest.
Isabela stood beside him.
“You should have protected her.”
Dante accepted it.
“Yes.”
“She was here because of me.”
“Yes.”
“Don’t agree with me.”
“Would you prefer a lie?”
She looked at him.
“No.”
“Then we find her.”
Bruno entered.
“We found the wooden gear.”
“Where?”
“Laundry tunnel.”
They followed.
The gear lay beside a metal access hatch.
Inside was an old service passage.
Rosa stared.
“That was sealed years ago.”
“Apparently not.”
The passage led beyond the main estate wall.
To an abandoned gardener’s cottage.
Inside, they found Sofia’s sweater.
And blood.
Isabela stopped breathing.
Henrique checked it.
“Not much.”
Dante looked at him.
“Whose?”
“Unknown.”
A phone rang.
Old landline.
Everyone froze.
Dante answered.
A distorted voice.
“You removed too many people.”
Dante’s gaze sharpened.
“You took the wrong child.”
A laugh.
“She isn’t wrong if you care.”
“Put her on.”
Silence.
Then Sofia’s voice.
“Mister Dante?”
Dante closed his eyes.
“Sofia.”
“Mommy is mad.”
Despite everything, Dante almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“Very.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you alone?”
A pause.
Sofia remembered enough not to answer directly.
“No dolls here.”
Isabela covered her mouth.
Dante understood the code only because Sofia had complained earlier that the guest rooms all had porcelain dolls.
No dolls.
Industrial location.
Maybe Bellweather.
The distorted voice returned.
“Bring the seal.”
“You get it after I see both hostages.”
“Midnight.”
The call ended.
Bruno began tracing.
Nothing.
Dante looked at Isabela.
“Sofia gave us something.”
“She said no dolls.”
“Would Bellweather have dolls?”
Isabela thought.
“Pediatric wing did.”
“Warehouse?”
“No.”
Dante smiled.
“She’s in the warehouse.”
They moved earlier than ordered.
Not with an army.
With four people.
Dante.
Bruno.
Isabela.
Elias.
Because Elias returned at dusk.
He appeared at the estate gate holding a rifle and said one sentence.
“They took my granddaughter.”
Dante nearly killed him for not telling him sooner.
Instead he let him in.
“You have one job.”
“What?”
“Get Sofia out.”
Elias looked at him.
“And Elena?”
“I get my sister.”
The Bellweather facility stood abandoned under rain.
Three stories.
Broken windows.
One security light.
They entered through an underground maintenance tunnel Elias knew.
Dante used crutches.
Every step felt like fire.
But he moved.
The wheelchair stayed behind.
Isabela saw him standing for the first time.
Her eyes widened.
He gave a thin smile.
“Surprise.”
Inside, they split.
Bruno and Dante toward the medical wing.
Isabela and Elias toward storage.
They found Elena first.
Alive.
But not tied to a chair.
Standing.
Holding a gun.
Aimed directly at Dante.
He froze.
Elena stared at him.
Same dark eyes.
Same jawline.
Same Montenegro expression.
Dante lowered his crutch slightly.
“Elena.”
She looked furious.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“Were you kidnapped?”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you armed?”
“Because I escaped.”
“Where’s Sofia?”
Elena’s face changed.
“Who?”
A gunshot echoed from the storage wing.
Isabela screamed.
Dante turned.
Then Elena grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because that shot wasn’t aimed at your people.”
Another gunshot.
Then Elias shouted from the corridor.
“DANTE!”
Dante moved.
They found Elias on the floor.
Blood across his side.
Isabela knelt beside him.
“Sofia?”
Elias pointed toward a steel door.
“They moved her.”
Bruno opened it.
Empty room.
On the floor was Sofia’s wooden gear.
And beside it, a photograph.
Dante picked it up.
Sofia sitting in a car.
A man beside her.
Victor Montenegro.
On the back:
