Chapter 16 - WHY SOFIA WAS ALWAYS THE TARGET

Dante returned to the estate with the folder.
Alejandro was moved under armed medical protection.
Rosa was detained.
No more private room.
No more respect.
Just guards.
Dante found Isabela holding Sofia asleep on the sofa.
He placed the photograph in front of her.
She stared.
“When was this taken?”
“Two years ago.”
Isabela looked frightened.
“I don’t know.”
Dante opened another page.
Surveillance logs.
Isabela’s apartment.
Sofia’s daycare.
Pediatric appointments.
Rosa had been watching them.
Long before Dante’s accident.
Elias read the files.
His face changed.
“She found them.”
Dante turned.
“You knew she might?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell Isabela?”
“I thought moving them would expose them.”
Isabela stood.
“You let my daughter be watched?”
Elias looked ashamed.
“I thought I had it contained.”
“You thought wrong.”
Dante continued reading.
Sofia’s bloodline made her unique.
Under the trust rules, if the primary line became incapacitated and the secondary line was compromised, a minor descendant could become protected beneficiary.
Protected.
Meaning no adult could fully dissolve her claim.
Rosa wanted a child heir.
A controllable heir.
Sofia.
The accident was designed to remove Dante from immediate control.
Elena would be forced into temporary authority.
Then discredited.
Victor could be implicated in crimes.
Sofia would become ultimate beneficiary.
And Rosa would serve as guardian trustee.
Dante stared at the papers.
“She built a legal path to control everything through a four-year-old.”
Bruno nodded.
“That’s the plan.”
Isabela looked sick.
“She was never trying to kill Sofia.”
“No,” Dante said.
“She was trying to own her.”
That was worse.
Dante went to Rosa.
She sat behind glass.
“You watched Sofia for two years.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She is intelligent.”
“She is a child.”
“She is the future.”
“She likes wooden toys.”
Rosa’s eyes narrowed.
Dante continued.
“She hates peas.”
No response.
“She sleeps with one sock off because she kicks blankets.”
Rosa looked annoyed.
“You’re being emotional.”
“Yes.”
Dante leaned closer.
“That is the part you never understood.”
Rosa said nothing.
“You looked at Sofia and saw a beneficiary.”
“I saw stability.”
“I saw a child who saved my life.”
“By accident.”
“No.”
Dante shook his head.
“She paid attention.”
He stood.
“Something no adult in this family bothered to do.”
Rosa watched him leave.
Then said:
“You still don’t know who altered the brace.”
Dante stopped.
“Rafael.”
“He rotated it.”
Dante turned.
Rosa smiled faintly.
“But he didn’t decide the direction.”
A chill.
“Who did?”
Rosa looked pleased with herself.
“Ask Dr. Henrique.”
Dante found Henrique in the medical suite.
He confronted him.
Henrique looked exhausted.
“I told Rafael how the brace worked.”
“Why?”
“He asked.”
“Why would a therapist ask something he already knew?”
Henrique went silent.
“You knew he was tampering.”
“No.”
“But you gave him the exact mechanics.”
“Yes.”
“Anything else?”
Henrique’s eyes filled with shame.
“I gave Voss your recovery data.”
Dante stared.
“When?”
“Every week.”
“Why?”
“They told me it was required for the rehabilitation grant.”
“Did you know Rosa funded them?”
“No.”
Dante wanted to believe him.
Then Sofia entered.
She looked at Henrique.
And hid behind Isabela.
Everyone noticed.
Dante crouched carefully.
“Sofia?”
She whispered.
“I don’t like him.”
Henrique looked devastated.
Dante asked gently.
“Why?”
“He came into Mommy’s room.”
Henrique froze.
“When?”
“The night I disappeared.”
All eyes turned to him.
Henrique shook his head.
“No.”
Sofia pointed.
“You wore black.”
Henrique’s face changed.
Then Dante understood.
Not Henrique.
Someone dressed like him.
Same height.
Same build.
Someone Sofia thought was Henrique.
Dante looked at Bruno.
“Hospital footage.”
They pulled the old frame of Elias.
Then newer mansion footage.
One man appeared in multiple staff uniforms.
Maintenance.
Medical assistant.
Security.
Always partially hidden.
Same posture.
Same limp.
Bruno enhanced a frame.
The face emerged.
Camila looked over Dante’s shoulder.
She gasped.
“That’s my brother.”
Dante turned.
The brother Camila claimed had been threatened.
The reason she cooperated.
“What’s his name?”
Camila whispered.
“Adrian.”
Bruno searched.
Adrian Vale.
Former military intelligence contractor.
Disappeared four years earlier.
Dante stared at the screen.
The conspiracy had another layer.
And Adrian had been inside the mansion the entire time.
Then the estate lights went out again.
Dante didn’t move.
“Not this time.”
Backup systems stayed on.
Bruno smiled.
They had changed the grid.
A camera showed Adrian moving toward the detention room.
Toward Rosa.
Dante watched him approach her door.
Rosa stood inside.
Waiting.
Adrian unlocked it.
And bowed his head.
“Mother.”
Dante stared at the monitor.
Camila whispered.
“No.”
Rosa Montenegro had another son.
A secret son.
May you like
And suddenly the entire conspiracy had a new heir.
