Chapter 18 - THE FATHER BEHIND THE WAR

Dante refused to believe Adrian.

Then he remembered Alejandro’s timing.

His reappearance.

The files.

The photograph of Isabela.

The convenient revelations.

He had been feeding Dante information in controlled pieces.

Exactly like Rosa.

Dante went to the secured clinic where Alejandro had been moved.

Empty bed.

One dead guard.

One unconscious nurse.

Alejandro gone.

On the pillow lay a handwritten note.

SON,

YOU WERE ALWAYS TOO SLOW TO DISTRUST ME.

Dante stared at it.

No grief this time.

Only clarity.

Bruno checked security.

Alejandro had left twenty minutes earlier.

Assisted by two armed men.

Dante called Elias.

“Where would he go?”

Elias was silent.

Then:

“The harbor.”

“Why?”

“His old network used cargo routes.”

Dante moved.

At the harbor, they found Alejandro aboard a private freighter.

Not dying.

No weak old man.

He walked slowly but steadily.

Cancer was real.

But exaggerated.

Dante boarded alone.

Alejandro waited in a cabin.

“You came.”

“You knew I would.”

“Yes.”

Dante closed the door.

“Did you order the accident?”

Alejandro smiled faintly.

“No.”

“Did you know about it?”

“Yes.”

“And did nothing.”

“I tried to redirect Rosa.”

“By letting her destroy my leg?”

“By letting her expose herself.”

Dante’s face went cold.

“I was bait.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was monstrous.

“Why?”

“Because Rosa had spent seventeen years building control inside the family.”

“And you spent seventeen years hiding.”

“Building outside it.”

Dante understood.

Two empires.

Two siblings.

Using the next generation as pieces.

Alejandro poured water.

“I needed to know which network remained loyal to her.”

“So you let her attack me.”

“I knew you would survive.”

“My driver didn’t.”

Alejandro paused.

“Collateral damage.”

Dante stared at his father.

There it was.

The sentence that ended whatever childhood image remained.

“You are exactly what Rosa said.”

Alejandro smiled.

“Dangerous?”

“No.”

Dante stepped closer.

“Poison.”

Alejandro’s smile faded.

Dante continued.

“You both kept saying this was about protecting the family.”

“It is.”

“No.”

Dante shook his head.

“It’s about being unable to imagine a world where you aren’t in control.”

Alejandro looked almost disappointed.

“You’ve become sentimental.”

“I’ve become tired.”

“Of what?”

Dante looked toward the harbor.

“Burying people for your ambitions.”

Alejandro leaned back.

“You think you can dissolve the trust?”

“Yes.”

“You’ll start a war.”

“Then I’ll survive it.”

“Your sister?”

“Protected.”

“Victor?”

“Alive.”

“Rosa?”

“Contained.”

“Sofia?”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t say her name.”

Alejandro smiled.

“There.”

“What?”

“The weakness.”

Dante understood immediately.

The door opened behind him.

Two armed men.

And one nurse carrying a tablet.

Alejandro spoke.

“The final transfer doesn’t require your willing signature anymore.”

Dante looked at the screen.

Biometric authorization.

Retinal verification.

Voice print.

His father had built a system that could force the transfer while keeping Dante alive.

“You planned this.”

“For years.”

“Who gets the trust?”

Alejandro’s answer chilled him.

“Me.”

Of course.

The supposedly dead founder.

The man legally removed from succession.

Unless his death status was reversed.

Documents were prepared.

DNA verification.

Witnesses.

Court filings.

Alejandro intended to return as the living patriarch.

And use Dante’s incapacity as proof the next generation had failed.

Dante looked at him.

“One problem.”

“What?”

“I’m not incapacitated.”

Alejandro’s gaze moved to Dante’s legs.

Dante stood.

Fully.

No chair.

No crutch.

Alejandro’s face changed.

Dante smiled.

“Sofia noticed something no one else did.”

He stepped forward.

“Then Henrique fixed the brace.”

Another step.

“And you made the same mistake as Rosa.”

Alejandro looked toward the guards.

Dante continued.

“You kept watching the version of me you created.”

The cabin door exploded inward.

Bruno’s team entered.

Alejandro’s men were disarmed.

Dante had never boarded alone.

A tracker in his coat had guided them.

Alejandro stared.

“You planned this.”

Dante looked at him.

“Family tradition.”

Alejandro was arrested by Dante’s external legal security liaison and federal financial investigators.

Not killed.

Not disappeared.

For once, the Montenegro family would face daylight.

As officers led Alejandro away, he looked at Dante.

“You’ll regret this.”

Dante answered.

“Probably.”

Then:

“But it’ll be my regret.”

The war seemed over.

Until Bruno approached.

“We found something on Alejandro’s tablet.”

“What?”

“A live video feed.”

Dante looked.

The mansion nursery.

Sofia sleeping.

Isabela sitting beside her.

Dante’s blood chilled.

The feed had been active for months.

Someone was still watching.

And the access source was not Alejandro.

Not Rosa.

Not Adrian.

The account name was:

HENRIQUE.A.

Dante slowly looked toward the dock.

May you like

Dr. Henrique was gone.
