Chapter 7 - Mara Bennett

Mara Bennett was alive.
Evelyn discovered it by accident.
The house manager had kept records of every employee who had worked at Brooks Mansion for twenty-one years.
Addresses.
References.
Emergency contacts.
Mara's emergency contact had been an older sister named Rebecca.
Rebecca had moved twice.
Her newest address led to a small town in Wisconsin.
Daniel sent no guards.
Natalie insisted.
“If Adrian is watching your men, sending security announces we're looking.”
Daniel disliked the logic because it was correct.
So Natalie and Evelyn drove north in an ordinary gray sedan.
Rebecca Bennett lived above a flower shop.
When Natalie mentioned Mara's name, the woman's face closed.
“My sister doesn't exist to the Brooks family.”
Natalie handed her the note.
Rebecca's expression changed.
“She left this?”
“We found it after she disappeared.”
Rebecca looked toward the stairs.
Then she unlocked the apartment door.
“Mara.”
A woman appeared at the top of the staircase.
Early thirties.
Thin.
Dark circles beneath frightened eyes.
When she saw Evelyn, she backed away.
“No.”
Evelyn stopped.
“Mara.”
“No.”
“We are not here to bring you back.”
Mara looked at Natalie.
“Who are you?”
“Lucas's new maid.”
Fear flashed across Mara's face.
“Leave.”
Natalie shook her head.
“Mara—”
“Leave that house.”
Her voice cracked.
“Tonight.”
Natalie climbed one stair.
“Lucas still asks about you.”
Mara covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“He remembers?”
“He remembers everything.”
Mara sat down.
For several minutes she could not speak.
Then the story came out.
She had found Caroline's second phone inside the red wing.
She had recognized Adrian's voice on recordings.
Before she could tell Daniel, Adrian caught her.
“He said nobody would believe me.”
Mara's hands shook.
“He said Daniel would think I was trying to blackmail him.”
“What did he threaten?”
“My sister.”
Rebecca looked away.
“He had photographs of her leaving work.”
Mara continued.
“He gave me cash and a new identity.”
“Why didn't you tell Daniel later?”
“Because Adrian called me once a month.”
Natalie's stomach tightened.
“For how long?”
“Until six months ago.”
“What changed?”
“He stopped calling.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Why?”
Mara looked at Natalie.
“Because he thought the evidence was gone.”
Natalie showed her Caroline's letter.
Mara stared at it.
Then she whispered.
“There was more.”
Daniel's life changed again that evening.
Mara returned to Chicago under federal protection arranged through an attorney Caroline once trusted.
She told Daniel everything.
Including the detail that finally destroyed the last piece of his loyalty to Adrian.
Caroline had not died instantly in the crash.
She had called Adrian.
Not Daniel.
Why?
Because Adrian had been the nearest person.
She begged him to send help.
He never did.
Phone records proved he waited nineteen minutes before calling emergency services.
Nineteen minutes.
Daniel sat alone in his office after hearing it.
Natalie found him there.
The room was dark.
“Daniel.”
He did not move.
“I killed her.”
“No.”
“I put Adrian beside us.”
“You trusted the wrong man.”
“I made the world she wanted to escape.”
Natalie remained quiet.
Some guilt should not be erased too quickly.
Daniel finally looked at her.
“If I had listened to Caroline, Lucas would still have his mother.”
“You don't know that.”
“I know she was afraid.”
He looked at his hands.
“And I made fear normal.”
Natalie sat across from him.
“What matters now is what you do with the truth.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“I know what I want to do.”
“That's not what I said.”
He looked at her.
“You want to kill Adrian.”
Daniel did not deny it.
“And maybe part of you thinks that will fix everything.”
“No.”
“Good.”
Natalie leaned forward.
“Because Lucas doesn't need revenge.”
Her voice softened.
“He needs a father who survives this.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.

Outside the office, neither of them noticed the small shadow beneath the door.
Lucas had heard every word.
