Chapter 4 - What Caroline Knew

Daniel locked the mansion down within three minutes.
Nobody entered.
Nobody left.
Security teams moved through every floor.
Adrian arrived in Daniel's office ten minutes later.
That alone told Natalie something.
He had not been inside the mansion when the call came.
Daniel stood behind his desk.
Natalie remained near the bookshelves.
Evelyn sat rigidly in a leather chair.
Adrian glanced between them.
“What happened?”
Daniel held up his phone.
“Someone called me.”
Adrian frowned.
“Threat?”
“They mentioned Natalie.”
Adrian looked at her.
Only briefly.
“Meaning?”
“They know she's asking questions.”
Adrian's face remained calm.
“What questions?”
Daniel watched him carefully.
“About Mara Bennett.”
Something changed behind Adrian's eyes.
It lasted less than a second.
Natalie still saw it.
“So this is about the nanny?”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Where were you the night Mara disappeared?”
Adrian stared at him.
“You know where I was.”
“Tell me.”
“New York.”
“Where?”
“The Langham.”
“Room?”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“I don't remember.”
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian laughed softly.
“Eighteen years, Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“And four days after a maid walks through your door, you're questioning me like this?”
Natalie watched Daniel.
This was the exact weakness Evelyn had described.
Loyalty.
History.
Blindness.
Daniel stood.
“My son identified you.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“As what?”
“The man who threatened Mara.”
Silence filled the office.
Adrian turned slowly toward Natalie.
“Lucas told you that?”
“Yes.”
“He is five.”
“Yes.”
“He has nightmares.”
“Yes.”
“He also threw a statue at you yesterday.”
Natalie met his gaze.
“That doesn't make him a liar.”
Adrian looked back at Daniel.
“You're letting a frightened child and a household employee accuse me of something neither understands.”
Daniel came around the desk.
“What was behind the red door?”
Adrian's expression finally cracked.
Just slightly.
“Caroline's rooms.”
“You entered them.”
“I checked them after she died.”
“Mara saw you.”
“I don't know what Mara saw.”
“Then help me understand.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You want the truth?”
Daniel waited.
“Caroline was planning to leave you.”
Natalie saw Daniel recoil as if Adrian had struck him.
Adrian continued.
“She contacted an attorney.”
Daniel's voice dropped.
“You're lying.”
“I found the papers after her death.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your wife was dead.”
Adrian's tone softened.
“And because you were barely functioning.”
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
“What papers?”
“Custody arrangements.”
Natalie looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn appeared genuinely shocked.
Adrian continued.
“She intended to take Lucas.”
Daniel's face drained.
“That isn't possible.”
“She believed your world would eventually kill him.”
Daniel stared at Adrian for a long time.
Then he said something Natalie did not expect.
“She was right.”
The room went silent.
Adrian looked almost offended.
Daniel turned away.
“Leave.”
“Daniel—”
“Now.”
Adrian stood still.
Then nodded.
As he passed Natalie, he paused.
“Be careful what you uncover.”
Natalie looked directly at him.
“Was that advice or a warning?”
Adrian gave her no answer.
That night, Daniel opened the red door.
He took Natalie and Evelyn with him.
Lucas stayed downstairs with two guards Daniel personally trusted.
The air inside Caroline's wing smelled faintly of cedar and dust.
Nothing had been moved.
A cream-colored coat remained draped over the back of a chair.
Perfume bottles stood on a vanity.
Books rested beside an armchair.
A framed photograph showed Caroline holding a baby Lucas.
Daniel stopped in front of it.
Natalie saw grief move through him.
Not polished grief.
Not distant mourning.
Something raw.
“She wanted to leave me.”
It sounded like a confession.
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“Maybe she wanted to leave the life.”
Daniel's eyes remained on the photograph.
“There wasn't a difference.”
They searched for nearly an hour.
Nothing.
Then Natalie noticed scratches on the wooden floor beneath the writing desk.
She pushed it aside.
Behind it was a loose section of wall paneling.
Daniel removed it.
Inside was a small metal box.
No lock.
Daniel opened it.
There were photographs.
Documents.
A flash drive.
And an envelope with Daniel's name.
His hands trembled when he opened it.
The letter inside was dated five days before Caroline's death.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I failed to leave quietly.
I know what Adrian has been doing.
I know about the shipments through Pier 19.
I know he has been using your name to build something you never authorized.
I also know he discovered that I was collecting proof.
Do not confront him unless Lucas is somewhere safe.
He will never threaten you directly.
He knows you would destroy him.
He will threaten the person you love most.
Daniel stopped reading.
Natalie felt the room turn cold.
Evelyn whispered.
“Lucas.”
Daniel read the final lines.
I wanted to take our son away because I stopped believing you could separate the man you became from the father Lucas needed.
If you still have a chance to become that father, take it.
Do not waste it the way we wasted us.
Caroline.
Daniel lowered the letter.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then a scream came from downstairs.
Lucas.
Daniel dropped the paper and ran.
Natalie followed.
They reached the playroom.
One of the guards lay unconscious near the doorway.
The second was gone.
The French doors stood open.
Cold night air poured inside.
Lucas was nowhere in sight.
On the carpet lay Arthur, the stuffed fox.
A small white card had been pinned through its chest.
Daniel picked it up.
May you like
Three words were written in black ink.
Stop digging, Daniel.
