Chapter 17 - The Night the Lights Went Out

The gala never happened.
But at eight that evening, every light in Brooks Mansion died.
Daniel stood in the library.
Natalie was upstairs with Lucas.
Evelyn sat near the security control room.
Emergency generators should have activated.
They did not.
Daniel whispered.
“He's here.”
Federal agents hidden throughout the estate moved into position.
Upstairs, Natalie locked Lucas's bedroom.
He grabbed Arthur.
“Is it Adrian?”
Natalie did not lie.
“Maybe.”
Lucas breathed quickly.
“What do we do?”
“What did we practice?”
“Stay away from windows.”
“Good.”
“Don't hide where nobody knows.”
“Good.”
“If we move, leave marks.”
Natalie touched his shoulder.
“Exactly.”
A sound came from behind the wall.
Lucas froze.
The maintenance passage.
Natalie remembered the architectural plans.
“Bathroom.”
They moved.
The bedroom door opened behind them.
Not forced.
Unlocked.
Someone had a key.
Natalie pushed Lucas into the bathroom.
Adrian entered the bedroom.
His silhouette appeared against the hallway emergency lights.
“Natalie.”
She said nothing.
“I know you're in here.”
Lucas covered his mouth.
Adrian continued.
“You really believe Daniel changed?”
Natalie moved toward the shower enclosure.
“He doesn't change.”
Adrian's footsteps approached.
“He replaces obsessions.”
Natalie whispered to Lucas.
“When I say run, take the service door.”
A narrow maintenance panel stood behind the linen cabinet.
Evelyn had shown them.
Lucas nodded.
Adrian reached the bathroom.
Natalie opened the door before he could.
He seemed surprised.
“Where is Lucas?”
“Gone.”
Adrian smiled.
“You're a terrible liar.”
He stepped closer.
Natalie held his gaze.
“You lost.”
Adrian's smile faded.
“Daniel surrendered the companies.”
“You think this was about companies?”
“What was it about?”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Being second.”
Natalie finally understood.
For eighteen years, Adrian had stood beside Daniel.
Daniel got the name.
Respect.
Fear.
Caroline.
A son.
Legacy.
Adrian got proximity.
Nothing more.
“You hated him.”
“I built him.”
Adrian's voice cracked.
“He would have been dead at twenty-six without me.”
“And instead of walking away, you spent eighteen years becoming the thing you said he was.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Careful.”
Natalie heard Lucas moving behind the panel.
Adrian heard it too.
He lunged.
Natalie blocked him.
“Run!”
Lucas crawled into the passage.
Adrian shoved Natalie aside.
She hit the wall.
Pain exploded through her shoulder.
He pulled the panel open.
Lucas was already gone.
Adrian cursed.
Then a voice sounded from the bedroom.
“Step away.”
Daniel.
Adrian turned.
Daniel stood with a gun lowered but ready.
For eighteen years they had stood on the same side.
Now a child's bedroom separated them.
Adrian smiled.
“Do it.”
Daniel's hand tightened.
“You want to.”
“Yes.”
“You always did.”
Daniel looked at the man who had betrayed his wife.
Threatened his son.
Terrorized his home.
Every old instinct told him to fire.
Then Lucas's voice came from the passage.
“Daddy.”
Daniel's finger moved away from the trigger.
Adrian noticed.
And laughed.
“She made you weak.”
Daniel looked toward Natalie.
Then back at Adrian.
“No.”
He lowered the weapon.
“She showed me what strength costs.”
Federal agents entered.
Adrian's smile disappeared.
Daniel stepped backward.
“You don't get to make my son watch me become you.”
Adrian was arrested in Lucas's bedroom.
The war ended without Daniel firing a shot.
But before agents took Adrian away, he looked at Lucas.
“You think this changes who your father is?”
Lucas stepped closer to Daniel.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
Lucas finished.
“He changed that himself.”
Daniel closed his eyes.

His five-year-old son had just given him something he had spent his life believing could only be taken by force.
A second chance.
