Chapter 18 - The Trial

Adrian Cole's trial began four months later.

Mara testified.

Dr. Hale testified.

Rebecca testified.

Evelyn testified.

Then Daniel took the stand.

For three days he admitted what he had done.

Not everything prosecutors asked was flattering.

Some questions were brutal.

Daniel answered anyway.

Reporters filled the courthouse.

Natalie attended only once.

Lucas never did.

Daniel had decided his son did not need to watch adults turn pain into spectacle.

On the final day of testimony, Adrian's attorney asked Daniel.

“Mr. Brooks, isn't it true that you benefited from illegal activity for many years?”

“Yes.”

“And only decided to cooperate when your own family became a target?”

Daniel paused.

“Yes.”

“So this transformation you would have this jury believe occurred was actually self-interest.”

Daniel looked toward Adrian.

Then toward the jury.

“I don't know if transformation is the right word.”

The attorney frowned.

“What word would you use?”

Daniel thought of Caroline.

Lucas.

Natalie.

The bronze horse.

The red door.

The greenhouse.

“I finally became afraid of what I was teaching my son.”

The courtroom became quiet.

Daniel continued.

“I wish I could tell you I changed because I suddenly understood every person I had hurt.”

He looked down.

“I didn't.”

His honesty unsettled even the prosecutor.

“I changed because one day I saw my five-year-old son look at a stranger for safety instead of me.”

Natalie's eyes filled.

“And I realized whatever power I had built had made me powerful everywhere except the place that mattered.”

Adrian looked away.

The jury convicted him on every major count.

Conspiracy.

Kidnapping.

Extortion.

Witness intimidation.

Financial crimes.

Charges connected to Caroline's death followed.

Daniel received his sentence six weeks later.

Thirty months in federal custody.

Reduced because of cooperation.

Still prison.

Lucas did not understand.

“Thirty months is forever.”

Natalie sat beside him.

“It will feel long.”

“Is Daddy leaving?”

Daniel knelt.

“Yes.”

Lucas's face collapsed.

“But this time you know why.”

Daniel handed him a calendar.

“And you know where.”

Lucas cried.

Daniel did too.

“And I will call you every day I am allowed.”

Lucas looked at Natalie.

“Will you leave?”

Natalie shook her head.

“No.”

“Promise?”

Natalie took a breath.

“I promise I will not disappear.”

Lucas wrapped both arms around her.

Daniel watched.

May you like

Once, the sight of his son choosing Natalie had felt like failure.

Now it felt like grace.
