Chapter 2 - The House Meant for Another Woman

Elena did not slap Daniel.
Later, she would be strangely proud of that.
Not because he did not deserve it.
Because she finally understood that rage was exactly what he needed from her.
If she screamed, he could call her unstable.
If she struck him, he could claim she was dangerous.
If she collapsed, he could guide everyone’s attention away from the numbers and toward the grieving wife.
So Elena did something Daniel did not expect.
She became quiet.
“What address?”
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Don’t answer.”
Elena looked at Adrien.
“Can he stop her?”
“No.”
That was all Vanessa needed.
“Fourteen Twenty-Seven Halston Ridge.”
Elena knew the neighborhood.
Everyone in the city did.
Gated estates.
Private tennis courts.
Homes beginning around three million dollars.
She looked at Daniel.
“You bought her a house?”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“That isn’t what happened.”
“With a company in my name?”
“It’s an investment property.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You picked the nursery.”
Daniel turned on her.
“Stop talking.”
Nursery.
Elena’s gaze dropped to Vanessa’s stomach.
The red sequined dress revealed nothing obvious.
But now she saw the protective way Vanessa held one arm across her waist.
Vanessa noticed.
The truth moved between them before either woman spoke.
Elena closed her eyes.
“How far along?”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“Thirteen weeks.”
Daniel swore.
Elena opened her eyes.
Eight years of marriage ended inside her without ceremony.
Not at the mention of the affair.
Not even at the pregnancy.
It ended when she realized Daniel had built an escape route for himself using the identity he intended to leave buried beneath the wreckage.
“You planned this.”
“Elena—”
“You planned for me to be arrested.”
“No.”
“You opened companies in my name.”
“I had reasons.”
“You moved millions through them.”
“It was temporary.”
“You bought a house for your pregnant mistress.”
“She isn’t—”
Vanessa laughed again.
“Don’t.”
Daniel looked at her with disgust.
That told Elena everything she needed to know about what kind of future Vanessa would have had with him.
Adrien spoke to Marcus.
“Have security preserve every camera recording from tonight.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I’m beginning to suspect you may later remember events differently.”
Daniel’s mouth tightened.
Elena turned to Evelyn.
“Can you send me copies of everything connected to my name?”
“Yes.”
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
Daniel objected.
“You can’t disclose company information.”
Evelyn did not even look at him.
“If Mrs. Carter is the registered owner, I can disclose her own company records.”
That shut him up.
Elena turned to Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
Vanessa’s eyes dropped.
“Not at first.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“I knew about the companies.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Elena felt the betrayal deepen.
“And the stolen money?”
“I didn’t know it was stolen.”
Daniel scoffed.
Vanessa turned on him.
“You told me the transfers were tax restructuring.”
“They were.”
“No.”
Adrien’s voice was soft.
Every person in the corridor looked at him.
He held Daniel’s phone.
“There are messages between you and Vanessa discussing invoice splitting, foreign accounts, and a company registered to your wife.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“You opened my messages?”
“You handed me an unlocked phone.”
“I did not consent to—”
“Take it.”
Adrien extended the device.
Daniel hesitated.
Then grabbed it.
Adrien’s eyes remained on him.
“I already saw enough.”
Daniel looked suddenly less like the successful financial adviser Elena had married and more like the frightened young man she remembered from their first apartment.
Except back then his fear had made her want to protect him.
Now it made her wonder what he would do.
A phone rang.
Not Daniel’s.
Marcus answered his.
He listened for several seconds.
Then looked at Adrien.
“We have a problem.”
Adrien waited.
“Halston Ridge.”
Elena’s pulse jumped.
“What about it?”
Marcus’s gaze shifted toward her.
“Security company reported an alarm.”
Daniel went white.
Adrien noticed.
“Fire?”
“Break-in.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel immediately headed toward the ballroom.
Marcus blocked him.
“Move.”
“No.”
“That’s my property.”
Elena said, “No.”
Daniel froze.
She looked at him.
“If the company that bought it belongs to me, then apparently it’s my property.”
For the first time all evening, Daniel had no answer.
Adrien’s phone vibrated.
He read the message.
“Police are responding.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“We need to get there before they search anything.”
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Adrien looked up.
“What don’t you want them to search?”
Daniel swore.
Elena’s exhaustion vanished.
“What is in that house?”
“Nothing.”
“Daniel.”
“Documents.”
“What kind?”
“Business records.”
Vanessa whispered, “The basement.”
Daniel turned slowly.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“What basement?” Elena asked.
Vanessa was crying openly now.
“He told me never to go down there.”
Daniel moved toward her.
Marcus stepped between them.
Adrien looked at Elena.
“Do you want to see the house?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel laughed.
“You’re going with him?”
“This stopped being about jealousy several million dollars ago.”
Adrien turned toward the ballroom.
“Marcus, arrange cars.”
Daniel followed.
“You can’t keep me here.”
“Nobody is keeping you here.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
Adrien looked over his shoulder.
“Fine.”
Daniel stopped.
“If I were you, however, I’d ask why someone broke into a house connected to your scheme minutes after your transfer failed.”
That landed.
Daniel’s anger disappeared.
Fear replaced it.
Elena saw the calculation happening.
Someone else knew.
Someone else was moving.
Someone else might be destroying evidence.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Who did you tell?”
“Nobody.”
“Who?”
“Nobody!”
Daniel glanced around the corridor.
Then toward Adrien.
“This isn’t just me.”
Adrien’s expression hardened.
“I know.”
That answer shocked everyone.
Especially Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
Adrien walked closer.
“It means I’ve known for six weeks that someone inside my organization was leaking transaction schedules.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew?”
“I knew money was disappearing.”
“And you kept me close?”
“Yes.”
Daniel laughed once.
“You were watching me.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked at Adrien.
His honesty unsettled her almost as much as Daniel’s lies.
“You suspected him before tonight?”
“I suspected several people.”
“Did you suspect me?”
“No.”
“How could you not?”
“Because until you walked through my door tonight, I didn’t know Carter’s shell companies belonged to you.”
Daniel glanced toward Elena.
Something occurred to her.
“You thought leaving me outside would stop Adrien from connecting my face to my name.”
Daniel remained silent.
She nodded.
“That’s why you panicked.”
“Elena.”
“That’s why Vanessa said, ‘What if she sees him?’”
Vanessa covered her face.
Elena felt almost detached now.
Every new truth hurt less because each one confirmed the same conclusion.
Her marriage had not simply failed.
It had been weaponized.
They walked through the ballroom.
Guests stepped aside.
Some watched openly.
Daniel kept several paces behind Elena.
He no longer tried to touch her.
Outside, three black SUVs waited.
Elena paused at the top of the staircase where Daniel had abandoned her less than an hour earlier.
The cold air struck her face.
Adrien removed his coat.
She shook her head.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re shaking.”
“I’m angry.”
“You can be angry in a coat.”
Before she could object, he placed it around her shoulders.
The warmth startled her.
So did the gesture.
Daniel saw.
His expression twisted.
“You enjoying this?”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“The attention.”
She stared at him in disbelief.
Then Adrien laughed.
Not loudly.
But enough.
Daniel turned.
“What’s funny?”
Adrien’s eyes cooled.
“You.”
Daniel stepped closer.
Adrien did not move.
“You used your wife’s identity to conceal millions of dollars, bought a house for another woman, arranged your future around your wife taking the blame, and somehow your concern is whether she enjoys wearing another man’s coat.”
Daniel’s face flushed.
Elena walked past both men.
“I’m going to Halston Ridge.”
Marcus opened the rear door.
Adrien joined her.
Vanessa entered another vehicle with Evelyn.
Daniel demanded his own car.
Security allowed it.
Adrien watched his taillights.
“He’ll run.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then why let him drive?”
“He won’t run tonight.”
“How do you know?”
Adrien met her eyes.
“Because whatever is inside that basement frightens him more than I do.”
Twenty minutes later, police lights washed the gates of Halston Ridge in red and blue.
The front door of number 1427 hung partially open.
A security officer met them outside.
“Nothing obvious was taken.”
Adrien frowned.
“Then why break in?”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“They didn’t.”
“What?”
“The alarm wasn’t triggered by someone entering.”
Elena’s skin prickled.
“It was triggered by someone leaving.”
Daniel’s car arrived behind them.
He stepped out.
“What happened?”
The officer continued.
“We checked the internal cameras.”
Daniel stopped walking.
“Someone had been inside the house for at least four hours before the alarm.”
Vanessa arrived.
She looked toward the dark windows.
“Who?”
The officer handed a tablet to Adrien.
A grainy image filled the screen.
A man wearing a baseball cap carried two banker’s boxes out through a side entrance.
Elena leaned closer.
Daniel made a sound behind her.
She turned.
He looked terrified.
“You know him,” she said.
Daniel did not answer.
Adrien studied the image.
Then his face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Marcus saw it too.
“Boss.”
Elena looked between them.
“Who is he?”
Adrien stared at the frozen image.
“My brother.”
The cold night seemed to become colder.
Elena frowned.
“I didn’t know you had a brother.”
“Most people don’t.”
“Why would your brother be stealing documents from a house in my name?”
Adrien’s jaw tightened.
“That is a very good question.”
Then Daniel whispered a name.
“Sebastian.”
Adrien turned slowly.
Daniel realized he had exposed himself again.
“You know my brother?”
Daniel said nothing.
Adrien stepped closer.
“When did you meet Sebastian Vale?”
Daniel’s silence lasted three seconds.
Then the basement door inside the house slammed.
Everyone turned.
Marcus drew his weapon.
Police officers rushed toward the entrance.
Adrien moved Elena behind him.
Daniel backed away.
May you like
A second crash came from inside.
Someone else was still in the house.
