Chapter 14 - The House Was Never Safe

Elena refused to leave her home permanently.

Adrien did not argue.

He simply moved twelve security people onto the block.

She called it excessive.

He called it twelve.

The photograph frightened her more than she admitted.

Not because Hale threatened her.

Because someone had stood close enough to photograph her sleeping.

Someone had entered the one place Daniel’s betrayal had not already contaminated.

Her bedroom.

Her private space.

That night she slept at Margaret’s house instead.

Or tried to.

At two in the morning, she found Adrien in the kitchen making coffee.

“You don’t sleep?”

“Sometimes.”

“That sounds healthy.”

“It isn’t.”

She sat.

For several minutes neither spoke.

Then Elena asked, “Did Arthur love my mother?”

Adrien looked at his cup.

“Yes.”

She was surprised by certainty.

“How do you know?”

“I saw them once.”

“When?”

“I was fifteen.”

Elena waited.

“My father thought nobody was home.”

Adrien looked embarrassed by the memory.

“He was dancing with someone in the kitchen.”

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“What song?”

“I don’t remember.”

Elena smiled.

“I do.”

Adrien looked up.

“Clair de Lune?”

She nodded.

“Mom played it when she was happy.”

Adrien smiled faintly.

“They looked happy.”

The knowledge hurt in an unexpected way.

Arthur had been real.

Not merely a criminal father appearing after death.

He had loved her mother.

Maybe loved Elena from a distance.

Maybe stayed away because that was the only safe gift he could give.

“Did your mother know?”

Adrien became still.

“I don’t know.”

Elena watched him.

“You think she did.”

“Yes.”

“Was she angry?”

“My parents’ marriage was complicated.”

“Meaning?”

“They loved each other.”

He looked toward the dark window.

“They also hurt each other.”

Elena laughed softly.

“Apparently that’s hereditary.”

Adrien looked at her.

The silence changed.

Not romantic exactly.

But aware.

Too aware.

Elena looked down first.

Her marriage had ended less than three days earlier.

Emotion did not obey calendars.

But she refused to use another man as anesthesia.

Adrien seemed to understand.

He changed the subject.

“Hale’s board meeting moved up.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Directors are afraid.”

“Of him?”

“Of scandal.”

“Same thing in expensive clothing.”

Adrien smiled.

“You’ll attend remotely.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

“Hale threatened your life.”

“And photographing me sleeping proves he can reach places he shouldn’t.”

“Yes.”

“So hiding in a remote room doesn’t solve the problem.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Find the person inside your security.”

Adrien’s face hardened.

“You think the leak is mine.”

“I think Hale knew I was voting before Daniel’s lawyer could have told him.”

“Possibly.”

“And someone entered my house despite your security rotation.”

Adrien frowned.

“We didn’t start full protection until after the threat.”

“But you had two men outside.”

“Yes.”

“Neither saw anyone.”

“No.”

“So either the photographer entered earlier…”

“Or.”

“Someone knew the blind spots.”

Adrien picked up his phone.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

Elena explained.

He did not become defensive.

That impressed her.

“We audit everyone,” he said.

“Including me.”

Adrien frowned.

Marcus shrugged.

“She’s right.”

By dawn, they found it.

One security supervisor had accessed Elena’s home camera network twice without authorization.

Name: Owen Pike.

Marcus recognized it.

“Six years with us.”

Adrien’s expression hardened.

“Where is he?”

“Off shift.”

“Call him.”

No answer.

They checked his apartment.

Empty.

His bank records showed a deposit.

Two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Hale.

But the apartment contained something else.

Photographs.

Elena.

Adrien.

Sebastian.

Daniel.

Vale headquarters.

The board members.

A wall of surveillance.

Marcus found a schedule.

Tomorrow’s board meeting.

Beside Elena’s name:

GARAGE B.

Adrien went pale.

“She is not going.”

Elena read the paper.

“Garage B.”

“Yes.”

“Why specify a garage?”

Marcus understood.

“Ambush point.”

“Then we know where Hale expects me.”

Adrien shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“We are not using you as bait.”

“I wasn’t suggesting—”

“Yes, you were.”

“Fine.”

She looked at Marcus.

“I was.”

Marcus avoided Adrien’s gaze.

Elena continued.

“Hale believes Pike still works for you.”

“Probably.”

“Then let Pike’s schedule remain unchanged.”

Adrien stared.

“You want Hale’s people to believe you’ll enter through Garage B.”

“Yes.”

“And you don’t.”

“Yes.”

“We place federal agents there.”

“Yes.”

Adrien rubbed his forehead.

“I hate this family.”

Elena smiled.

“So do I.”

At eleven the next morning, Hale Consolidated’s emergency board meeting began on the thirty-ninth floor.

Elena entered through the service elevator.

Federal agents filled Garage B.

At 11:07, two armed men arrived in a delivery van.

Both were arrested.

At 11:12, a third man attempted to enter from an adjacent stairwell.

Arrested.

At 11:18, Victor Hale joined the board meeting by video.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

Elena sat beside Rebecca.

Adrien attended as a shareholder representative.

Hale smiled when he saw her.

“Mrs. Carter.”

“Ms. Lewis soon.”

His smile tightened.

“Of course.”

The board chair explained the vote.

Hale’s removal.

Temporary leadership.

External forensic review.

Elena listened.

Then Hale spoke.

“Before we vote, the board should understand who is influencing our newest shareholder.”

His eyes moved to Adrien.

“Arthur Vale’s children are attempting a hostile takeover.”

Elena said, “I don’t want your company.”

“Yet you intend to remove me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you tried to kill people.”

Hale smiled.

“Allegedly.”

“You were arrested in a crypt with armed men.”

“An unfortunate misunderstanding.”

Elena laughed.

Several board members looked down to hide smiles.

Hale’s face hardened.

The vote began.

Director one: remove.

Two: remove.

Three: abstain.

Four: remove.

Then Elena.

Rebecca whispered, “State only your vote.”

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“I vote to remove Victor Hale as chairman and chief executive officer.”

Hale’s expression did not change.

But his eyes did.

The final tally passed.

Victor Hale was removed.

Elena exhaled.

Then every screen in the boardroom went black.

Lights died.

Emergency alarms began.

Adrien stood instantly.

“Everybody down.”

A voice came through the speaker system.

Hale.

“You didn’t think I’d trust a board vote, did you?”

Elena’s blood went cold.

Adrien grabbed her.

“Move.”

Security rushed toward the emergency stairs.

Smoke began entering beneath one door.

Fire.

Again.

Hale’s favorite answer.

Elena looked at Adrien.

“He’s burning the building.”

“No.”

Adrien checked the wall panel.

“Smoke diversion.”

“How do you know?”

“No heat alarm.”

The speakers crackled.

Hale laughed.

“Garage B was for distraction.”

Adrien’s expression changed.

“What?”

Elena understood one second later.

“He wanted security downstairs.”

A gunshot came from the hall.

Then another.

Hale had never intended to kill Elena in the garage.

May you like

He wanted Adrien to empty the upper floors protecting her.

The boardroom door exploded inward.
