Chapter 15 - The Vote That Started a War

Three masked men entered.
Adrien shoved Elena behind the conference table.
Glass shattered.
Board members screamed.
Security returned fire from the hallway.
Rebecca crawled beside Elena.
“This is not normal corporate governance.”
Elena almost laughed.
“Noted.”
One attacker crossed the room.
Elena saw his boots first.
Closer.
Closer.
Adrien was on the opposite side, pinned behind a stone column.
Marcus yelled through the smoke.
“East exit!”
The attacker reached Elena’s end of the table.
She grabbed the only weapon available.
A heavy glass water pitcher.
When he turned the corner, Elena swung.
The pitcher shattered against his forearm.
His gun dropped.
Rebecca kicked it away.
Adrien crossed the room and slammed the man into the wall.
Federal agents entered seconds later.
The attack ended in under four minutes.
It felt endless.
Elena stood shaking among broken glass and smoke.
Adrien looked at her hand.
Blood.
“You’re cut.”
She looked down.
Small slice.
“I’m fine.”
“That seems to be everyone’s favorite lie.”
She stared.
“Did you just quote me?”
“Yes.”
Outside, sirens surrounded the building.
Hale had disconnected from the call.
His location was unknown.
The three attackers refused to speak.
One carried a phone.
Marcus unlocked it.
A single outgoing message appeared.
BOARD FAILED.
Reply:
MOVE TO PLAN D.
Elena looked at Adrien.
“How many plans does this man have?”
“Too many.”
Marcus received another call.
His face went blank.
“Boss.”
Adrien turned.
“What?”
“Vanessa’s transport.”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
“What happened?”
“Missing.”
Daniel had warned them.
Hale could reach Vanessa.
Now he had.
Adrien swore.
“Federal protection?”
“Two agents injured.”
“Vanessa?”
“Gone.”
Elena closed her eyes.
The baby.
Daniel’s child.
The woman who had helped betray her and later exposed the truth.
Elena did not forgive her.
But forgiveness was irrelevant.
Vanessa did not deserve Hale.
They went straight to the federal detention center.
Daniel already knew.
He stood behind the glass, fists clenched.
“You said she was protected.”
Adrien ignored his accusation.
“Who would Hale use?”
Daniel shook his head.
“You think I know every criminal in the city?”
Elena stepped closer to the glass.
“Think.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Vanessa mentioned family?”
“Her mother’s dead.”
“Father?”
“Arizona.”
“Siblings?”
“No.”
“Friends?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She moved here three years ago.”
Elena remembered something.
“The house.”
“What?”
“Halston Ridge.”
Adrien frowned.
“Hale knows it’s compromised.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“But Vanessa thought it was home.”
Daniel understood.
“She hid things there.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel.”
“I swear.”
Elena thought of the nursery.
The staged future.
Vanessa had believed it.
Maybe she prepared.
“What would she hide?”
Daniel looked down.
“Letters.”
“To you?”
“Our baby.”
Elena’s anger softened despite herself.
Vanessa had written to her unborn child.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
They searched Halston Ridge again.
The nursery was unfinished.
One wall painted pale yellow.
Boxes stacked near a crib still in packaging.
Elena felt a strange ache.
This was the life Vanessa thought she was getting.
Built entirely on Daniel’s lies.
Maya joined them after insisting she was well enough.
She walked through the nursery.
“Why are we looking for letters?”
“Possible clue.”
Maya examined the closet.
Then the dresser.
Elena noticed the wallpaper samples.
Vanessa had taped several to the wall.
One sample bulged.
Elena removed it.
Envelope.
Daniel.
Inside were letters.
Not sentimental.
Insurance documents.
Bank statements.
Copies of text messages.
Vanessa had been collecting evidence.
Adrien looked impressed.
“She didn’t trust him.”
Elena said, “Eventually.”
One document showed payments from Hale Consolidated to a private clinic.
Maya frowned.
“What’s this?”
Daniel read it.
His face changed.
“Vanessa went there.”
“For what?”
“She told me prenatal appointments.”
Elena looked at the payments.
Hale’s company paid them.
“That makes no sense.”
Adrien called Evelyn.
Minutes later she confirmed the clinic belonged to a Hale subsidiary.
Not obstetrics.
Genetic testing.
Elena’s skin prickled.
“What did Hale test?”
Daniel went pale.
“The baby.”
“Why would Hale care about your child?”
Daniel stared at the papers.
Then looked at Elena.
“I don’t think he does.”
Adrien understood first.
“He was testing Vanessa.”
“For?”
“Family relation.”
Elena frowned.
“To whom?”
Daniel sank onto a chair.
“No.”
“What?”
He looked sick.
“Vanessa told me her mother never knew her biological father.”
Silence.
Adrien stared.
“You think…”
Daniel nodded.
“Hale.”
Elena looked at the clinic papers.
Vanessa might be Victor Hale’s daughter.
Which made her pregnancy—
Another potential heir.
Another leverage point.
“Did Hale know?”
Adrien asked.
Daniel’s voice shook.
“The test was ordered three months ago.”
“Yes.”
Hale knew.
That explained the kidnapping.
Maybe not merely leverage.
Maybe control.
Elena searched the envelope again.
One handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, check the red house in Briar County.
No address.
Maya searched maps.
“There are twenty thousand red houses in Briar County.”
Adrien called Marcus.
“Property records tied to Vanessa’s mother.”
Within twenty minutes they found one.
A farmhouse outside Cedar Ridge.
Owned by a trust created six years ago.
Trust beneficiary: Vanessa Cole.
Settlor: Victor Hale.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“He knew for years.”
They drove north.
Police followed at a distance.
The red farmhouse stood alone behind bare trees.
No visible vehicles.
Elena wanted to enter.
Adrien refused this time.
She listened.
Agents cleared the structure.
Vanessa was inside.
Alive.
Alone.
No restraints.
No guards.
She stood in the kitchen crying when Elena entered.
Daniel was not permitted to come.
Vanessa stared at her.
“What are you doing here?”
“Looking for you.”
“Why?”
Elena almost laughed.
“You’re welcome.”
Vanessa covered her face.
“They told me Daniel was dead.”
“He isn’t.”
She began sobbing.
Elena waited.
Finally Vanessa whispered, “Hale is my father.”
“We know.”
Her head snapped up.
“How?”
“Clinic.”
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me.”
“When?”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“He brought you here?”
“Yes.”
“Why leave?”
Vanessa looked toward the rear window.
“Because I agreed.”
Elena’s skin chilled.
“Agreed to what?”
Vanessa held one hand protectively over her stomach.
“He wants the trust shares.”
“You don’t have them.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“But he thinks Daniel can get them from you.”
“He can’t.”
“I told him that.”
“So?”
Vanessa began crying again.
“He said there’s another way.”
Adrien stepped closer.
“What way?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
“He says Arthur’s trust doesn’t pass only to Elena.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
“If Elena dies without children…”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“It passes to Arthur’s next living descendant.”
Everyone went silent.
Adrien said, “Me.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Adrien stared.
“Then who?”
Vanessa looked at her stomach.
“The baby.”
Daniel’s unborn child might also be Arthur Vale’s descendant.
The implication struck Elena.
“That’s impossible.”
Vanessa whispered, “Unless Daniel isn’t the father.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
Adrien looked at Vanessa.
“Who is?”
Tears streamed down her face.
May you like
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
