Chapter 16 - The Child at the Center

The answer came from the genetic clinic.

Not quickly.

Not cleanly.

But by midnight, Rebecca had obtained enough court-authorized records to reconstruct Hale’s obsession.

Vanessa was Victor Hale’s biological daughter.

That part was confirmed.

But the fetus’s paternity testing was stranger.

Daniel had not been the only comparison.

The clinic had compared the unborn child against stored DNA samples from three men.

Daniel Carter.

Victor Hale.

And Sebastian Vale.

Elena stared at the report.

“Why Sebastian?”

Nobody answered.

Vanessa sat across the table looking destroyed.

“I never slept with Sebastian.”

Daniel’s attorney had arranged a secure video connection.

Daniel appeared on screen.

His face was white.

“Then why test him?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Adrien paced.

“Could the clinic have used Sebastian’s DNA to test broader family connection?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Elena looked at the inheritance clause.

Then understood.

“To prove the baby is related to Arthur.”

Adrien stopped.

“If Sebastian is Arthur’s son, shared markers could demonstrate family lineage.”

“Not paternity.”

“Exactly.”

Vanessa whispered, “So Daniel could still be the father.”

“Yes.”

Relief and confusion mixed on her face.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Elena almost looked away.

Their private pain was not hers.

Yet somehow the entire room had been pulled inside it.

Rebecca continued.

“Hale appears to have been researching whether Vanessa’s child could claim contingent beneficiary status.”

“Can it?” Elena asked.

“Possibly.”

“Even through Vanessa?”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Vanessa is Hale’s daughter, not Arthur’s.”

“Then the baby only links to Arthur through Daniel?”

Rebecca looked at Daniel on screen.

“If Daniel has Vale ancestry.”

Everybody went silent.

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t.”

Elena suddenly remembered page three.

Richard Carter.

Courier.

But what if Carter was not Daniel’s biological line?

Adrien asked, “Did Richard ever mention his parents?”

Daniel stared.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“Name?”

“Samuel Carter.”

Rebecca searched records.

Nothing.

Marcus checked deeper.

Twenty minutes later he found a sealed adoption certificate.

Richard Carter had been adopted.

Birth name:

Richard Valenti.

Adrien sat down.

Elena stared at the screen.

Valenti.

The Vale family’s original name.

Daniel whispered, “No.”

Further records revealed Richard’s biological father.

Dominic Valenti.

Arthur Vale’s uncle.

Daniel was a distant Vale descendant.

Which meant Daniel and Elena had unknowingly married within an extended family tree.

Not close enough to create obvious genetic concerns.

But close enough for the trust.

Rebecca read the language again.

“Next living descendant of founder’s bloodline.”

Daniel’s child could potentially qualify.

Elena leaned back.

“Hale discovered this.”

“Yes.”

“And he wants Vanessa’s child to inherit.”

“If you die.”

Silence.

Vanessa whispered, “He told me Elena was dangerous.”

Elena laughed.

“That’s creative.”

“He said you were trying to steal what belonged to my baby.”

Daniel’s face twisted with anger.

“That man kidnapped you.”

“I know.”

“He attacked you.”

“I know!”

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel softened immediately.

Elena watched.

There it was.

Something real.

Too late to save their lives from consequences.

But real.

Adrien looked at Elena.

“Hale wants you dead.”

“Yes.”

“We have proof now.”

“Good.”

“You say that too calmly.”

“I’ve had practice.”

Marcus entered.

“Found Pike.”

The corrupt security supervisor.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Airport hotel.”

“Talking?”

“He wants immunity.”

Adrien laughed.

“Popular trend.”

Marcus continued.

“He says Hale has a final extraction plan.”

“For whom?”

“Elena.”

Adrien’s face hardened.

“Why extract someone he wants dead?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because Hale needs her signature first.”

Rebecca explained.

The trust could not simply be inherited if Elena died immediately.

An emergency succession review could freeze assets for years.

But Elena could voluntarily transfer voting rights.

Hale needed her alive long enough to sign.

Then he could eliminate her.

“Where would he take me?” Elena asked.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Lake property.”

Adrien became still.

“What?”

“Pike says Hale is using Blackwater House.”

Adrien’s expression changed completely.

Elena noticed.

“What is Blackwater House?”

“My childhood home.”

“The one that burned?”

Adrien nodded.

“It was rebuilt.”

“By Hale?”

“Yes.”

The symbolism was obvious.

Hale wanted the final act where the first crime happened.

Adrien said, “We shut it down tonight.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Pike says Hale isn’t there yet.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Then we take the property now.”

Elena thought.

“If we raid it empty, Hale disappears.”

Adrien looked at her.

“No.”

She sighed.

“I haven’t even said anything.”

“You’re thinking about bait.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Adrien.”

“No.”

Maya raised her hand.

“Is this where I pretend I need the humidity system again?”

Nobody laughed.

Elena stood.

“Hale wants my signature.”

“Exactly.”

“So he needs me alive.”

“Until you sign.”

“Which gives us a window.”

“No.”

Rebecca said, “Legally, she has a point.”

Adrien stared at her.

“Not helping.”

Elena continued.

“We can record the coercion.”

“He has killed people.”

“Yes.”

“He burned a house with my family inside.”

“Yes.”

“He kidnapped Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“And you want to walk into his property.”

“Yes.”

Adrien slammed his hand onto the table.

“No.”

Everyone fell silent.

Elena stared.

Adrien breathed hard.

Then lowered his voice.

“I just found a sister.”

His anger cracked.

“I am not volunteering to lose her four days later.”

The room changed.

Elena felt something inside her soften.

Adrien looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

She moved closer.

“You don’t have to apologize for caring.”

“But?”

“But you don’t get to cage me because of it.”

He gave a painful laugh.

“You really are my sister.”

“Unfortunately.”

He looked at her.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

Marcus groaned.

“I knew that was coming.”

Adrien pointed at Elena.

“You follow every instruction.”

“No improvising.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“Reasonable improvising.”

“No.”

“Small improvising.”

“Elena.”

“Fine.”

The plan formed over the next six hours.

Elena would appear to accept Hale’s demand.

Pike would contact his handler.

A transfer packet would be prepared.

Federal agents would surround Blackwater House outside Hale’s surveillance radius.

Elena would wear two trackers.

One visible.

One hidden inside the hem of her dress.

Adrien would remain outside until a signal.

Daniel asked to speak to Elena privately before the operation.

She almost refused.

Then accepted.

His face filled the secure monitor.

“If anything happens…”

“Don’t.”

“I need to say it.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

Daniel swallowed.

“I destroyed the best thing I ever had because I thought being important mattered more than being good.”

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel.”

“I’m not asking forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I just…”

His voice broke.

“I hope you survive long enough to forget me.”

Elena stared at him.

“You were eight years of my life.”

“I know.”

“I won’t forget.”

Daniel looked down.

“But one day,” she continued, “I hope remembering you doesn’t hurt.”

He nodded.

Tears fell.

“That’s more than I deserve.”

“Yes.”

The connection ended.

The following night Elena arrived at Blackwater House alone.

Or appeared to.

The rebuilt mansion stood beside a dark lake.

Hale waited inside.

He smiled when she entered.

“You finally understand.”

Elena removed her coat.

“No.”

“What?”

“I finally understand you.”

His smile faded.

Hale placed transfer documents on the table.

“Sign.”

Elena sat.

“What happens after?”

“You leave.”

“Alive?”

He laughed.

“Of course.”

She looked around.

“No guards?”

“They’re nearby.”

“Sebastian?”

“In custody.”

“Adrien?”

“Outside somewhere.”

Elena’s heart skipped.

Hale knew.

He smiled.

“You thought I wouldn’t anticipate him?”

A television turned on.

Live security footage.

Adrien’s vehicles on the access road.

Federal teams hidden in the forest.

Every position exposed.

Elena’s blood ran cold.

Hale leaned closer.

“Your brother inherited your father’s arrogance.”

Then he held up a small device.

Jammer.

“No signal leaves this house.”

Elena looked toward the lake.

Hale smiled.

“You came here believing you were bait.”

He placed a pen beside her hand.

“But the trap was never for you.”

Outside, explosions lit the access road.

Elena jumped.

May you like

Hale smiled.

“It was for Adrien.”
