Chapter 6 - The Vault

We found Vanessa's car abandoned forty minutes later.

Driver's door open.

Phone smashed on the road.

A streak of blood on the steering wheel.

No Vanessa.

Police took over the scene.

Gabriel wanted me far away.

I refused.

“This started because everyone thought I needed protecting from the truth.”

“Someone just abducted a woman.”

“And they're doing it because of something connected to my family.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“She stays with us.”

Gabriel glared at him.

Daniel shrugged.

“You know I'm right.”

Gabriel hated that.

We went to the vault.

The manager refused access without the key.

Then I showed identification.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

“Cole.”

He checked his screen.

“The account holder is Evelyn Mercer.”

My heart started pounding.

“When was it opened?”

“Fourteen years ago.”

Before Adrian and I married.

“By whom?”

The manager hesitated.

“Samuel Price.”

We all froze.

He led us underground.

The vault key Vanessa stole wasn't required after I passed biometric verification.

Samuel had listed me as the primary holder.

Box 714 opened with a heavy metal click.

Inside were six folders.

One for each Mercer sibling.

A seventh envelope sat beneath them.

My name was written on the front in my grandmother's handwriting.

I stopped breathing.

Grandma Rose had been dead thirteen years.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Evelyn,

If you are reading this, someone has interfered with the safeguards I created.

Trust your brothers.

But trust documents more than promises.

I knew one day someone might discover what I protected for you.

So I created a second record.

Everything you need is here.

Love always,

Grandma.

Noah opened the folders.

Bank records.

Original trust agreements.

Share certificates.

Corporate ownership documents.

And a handwritten ledger.

Michael's face went white as he read.

“Jesus.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Grandma owned part of Cole Strategic Group.”

I laughed once.

“That makes no sense.”

Noah checked the certificates.

“It does.”

The first twelve million dollars used to save Adrian's failing company eleven years ago had not simply been a loan from my trust.

It had purchased forty-nine percent of the company.

In my name.

Adrian never told me.

Maybe he never knew.

But Richard did.

The documents bore his signature.

That explained everything.

The shell companies.

The forged authorizations.

The missing trust funds.

Richard and Adrian weren't just stealing family money.

They had been trying to secretly buy back my ownership using my own assets.

Daniel exhaled.

“If these are valid, Evelyn may still own forty-nine percent.”

Michael shook his head.

“Possibly more.”

“How?”

“Some of the later capital injections appear to have increased her stake.”

He ran numbers.

Then looked up.

“Fifty-two percent.”

I stared at him.

“Are you saying I own controlling interest in Adrian's company?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel smiled for the first time since the ballroom.

Adrian had spent eleven years telling me I lived because of him.

Now I learned he had spent eleven years working for a company I controlled.

Then Noah reached the last page of Grandma's ledger.

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

He didn't answer.

I grabbed the page.

There was a final handwritten notation.

Emergency successor agreement executed.

Beneficiary: Evelyn Mercer.

Secondary custodian: Richard Cole.

My stomach turned.

Richard hadn't merely known about my assets.

My grandmother had trusted him with them.

And he had betrayed her.

Before we could speak, the lights inside the vault shut off.

Complete darkness swallowed us.

Then the steel door slammed shut.

May you like

Someone had locked us inside.
