Chapter 11 - The Marriage Was the Plan

I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
Adrian had always claimed he barely knew Richard's financial dealings back then.
That was a lie.
He had been meeting with Grandma's doctor before her death.
I called Daniel.
Not Gabriel.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel and Luke were inside my apartment.
I showed them the photograph.
Luke photographed both sides.
Daniel read Grandma's writing.
“Where did this come from?”
“Under the door.”
“Security cameras?”
“Checking.”
Luke opened his laptop.
The building camera showed a woman in a baseball cap.
Face hidden.
She entered using a resident key fob.
“Can you trace it?”
“Already trying.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“If Adrian was involved before the marriage…”
“Then marrying me may have been part of the plan.”
Saying it out loud nearly broke me.
Eleven years.
Every anniversary.
Every promise.
Every night he told me he loved me.
Was I a wife?
Or access?
Luke's phone beeped.
He looked up.
“The key fob belongs to Vanessa.”
I called her.
She answered immediately.
“You got it?”
“You left the photograph?”
“Yes.”
“Where did you find it?”
“Adrian's safe.”
“When?”
“The morning after the birthday party.”
I frowned.
“You went back?”
“I knew his safe code.”
“Why not give it to police?”
“I was scared.”
“Vanessa, where are you?”
“At my sister's.”
“Why did Adrian have that picture?”
Silence.
Then she said, “There were others.”
“What others?”
“Pictures of you.”
My skin prickled.
“What do you mean?”
“College graduation. Your grandmother's house. Your first job.”
Daniel stood.
“Ask how old they are.”
I did.
Vanessa whispered, “Some were taken before Adrian said he met you.”
I sat down.
Adrian and I met at a charity auction when I was twenty-four.
Apparently, he had known who I was before then.
“How long?”
“One photograph was dated three years earlier.”
My chest tightened.
He had not met me accidentally.
He had selected me.
Daniel quietly said, “Marriage fraud may not be the right legal term, but this establishes motive.”
I barely heard him.
“Why me?”
Vanessa answered.
“Because you were the only Mercer who had direct beneficiary control over Rose's private trust.”
My grandmother hadn't just left me money.
She had made me the easiest doorway into the family's protected assets.
Adrian courted me to reach that door.
Richard guided him.
Grandma discovered it.
Then she died.
The story was suddenly much older than my marriage.
And much uglier.
Luke's computer chimed.
He had found another file embedded in the photograph scan.
A QR-style forensic marker.
It linked to an encrypted storage archive Grandma created.
Password protected.
One hint.
SIX KIDS. ONE HOME. THE THING EVELYN ALWAYS FORGOT.
My brothers looked at me.
I almost laughed.
“The back door key.”
Luke typed the phrase.
The archive opened.
Hundreds of documents appeared.
At the top was a video file.
Recorded by Grandma Rose three days before she died.
I clicked play.
Her face filled the screen.
And the first thing she said was:
May you like
“If you are watching this, Richard Cole has probably killed me.”
