Chapter 3 - The Mistress Changes Sides

“You?”
Adrian's voice dropped.
Vanessa backed away.
“I didn't know you were going to do that.”
“You told me she attacked you.”
“She spilled wine!”
“You said she humiliated you.”
“That doesn't mean I wanted you to beat her!”
Adrian took a step forward.
Vanessa moved behind a chair.
“I thought you'd make her apologize.”
“You enjoyed it.”
Her face twisted.
“Not after I saw what you became.”
Adrian lunged.
Daniel stepped into his path.
“Bad idea.”
Adrian stopped.
Police officers entered seconds later.
The lead officer looked around the ballroom, then at me.
“Mrs. Cole?”
“Yes.”
“Do you need medical attention?”
Before I could answer, Gabriel said, “Yes.”
“I can answer for myself.”
His expression softened.
“I know.”
I looked at the officer.
“Yes.”
Paramedics came through the doors.
Adrian started shouting about trespassing.
No one listened.
An officer took the riding crop from his hand.
Another photographed the ropes.
Then Judge Ward walked forward.
“I witnessed the entire incident.”
Adrian's father grabbed her arm.
“Helen.”
She jerked away.
“Don't.”
“We've known each other thirty years.”
“And tonight I learned something about your family I wish I didn't know.”
Richard Cole looked almost wounded.
That was the thing about powerful families.
They could watch someone else suffer for years.
Then act shocked when consequences entered the room.
As a paramedic cleaned my lip, an officer approached Adrian.
“Turn around.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You're arresting me?”
“Turn around, sir.”
“My attorney will have your badge.”
The officer didn't react.
“Hands behind your back.”
Adrian's mother screamed.
“This is outrageous!”
His sister began recording.
Vanessa stood perfectly still.
When the cuffs closed around Adrian's wrists, he looked at me.
Not frightened.
Not sorry.
Furious.
“You planned this.”
I shook my head.
“I planned a divorce.”
His face changed.
That got his attention.
“I was going to serve you Monday.”
The entire family went silent.
“The investigators had already begun documenting the affair and company transfers.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Gabriel looked at me sharply.
“Company transfers?”
I nodded.
Adrian shouted over me.
“Don't listen to her!”
That confirmed everything.
Gabriel turned toward him.
“What transfers?”
“Nothing.”
I reached for my purse.
Vanessa's eyes followed me.
Inside was a slim blue flash drive.
“I found payments moving from Cole Strategic Group into three offshore entities.”
Adrian's father went white.
I continued.
“The first transfer was eighteen months ago.”
Richard stared at his son.
“How much?”
“I only traced part of it.”
“How much, Evelyn?”
“Thirty-seven million dollars.”
No one spoke.
Richard's legs seemed to weaken.
Adrian recovered quickly.
“She doesn't understand corporate accounting.”
I held up the flash drive.
“Maybe not.”
Then I looked toward Gabriel.
“But Noah does.”
My youngest brother stepped forward.
Noah Mercer had built one of the largest forensic accounting firms on the East Coast.
Adrian finally recognized the name.
“Noah Mercer?”
Noah smiled.
“Nice to meet you.”
Adrian's eyes moved across all five men again.
And for the first time, he understood that my brothers weren't hired muscle.
Gabriel ran a global security firm.
Daniel was a federal prosecutor who had recently returned to private practice.
Luke owned a cybersecurity company.
Michael specialized in corporate restructuring.
Noah followed money for governments and financial institutions.
I had not hidden my brothers because I was ashamed.
I had hidden them because I wanted one part of my life to belong to me.
Adrian mistook privacy for weakness.
As officers moved him toward the door, he turned.
“You think you've won?”
I said nothing.
He smiled.
“Ask your brothers what happened to your grandmother's original trust.”
Gabriel's face changed.
I felt cold.
“What is he talking about?”
Adrian laughed.
Then the officers took him outside.
I turned toward Gabriel.
“What happened to Grandma's trust?”
None of my brothers answered.
That frightened me more than Adrian had.
“Gabriel?”
He finally looked at me.
And said the five words I never expected.
May you like
“Part of it is missing.”
