Chapter 12 - Rose's Last Message

Grandma looked tired in the video.

But her voice was sharp.

The same voice that used to stop six children from fighting with one sentence.

“Evelyn,” she said, “I am sorry.”

My throat closed.

“I believed Richard Cole was an honorable man. I was wrong.”

She explained everything.

Cole Strategic Group had been collapsing years before Adrian and I met.

Richard approached Grandma for capital.

She agreed under one condition.

Ownership.

He accepted.

Later, when the company recovered, Richard demanded she sell back the shares.

She refused.

Then he learned the shares would eventually transfer to me.

“Richard believes family wealth belongs to men who know how to control it,” Grandma said.

“He thinks you are soft.”

I almost smiled through my tears.

She continued.

“He is mistaken.”

Then came the part that changed everything.

“Adrian has been spending time near Evelyn.”

Daniel inhaled sharply.

“I do not believe the meeting was accidental.”

Grandma had investigated.

She found payments to people who tracked my schedule.

Charity events.

College alumni dinners.

Friends.

Adrian had spent months manufacturing the perfect “chance” meeting.

She confronted Richard.

He denied it.

She confronted Adrian.

He charmed her.

She didn't believe him.

“I intended to tell you after your engagement party,” Grandma said.

“But you were happy.”

Her face broke.

“I made the mistake of waiting for stronger proof.”

Then she held up copies of the same financial documents we found in the vault.

“If something happens to me, these records establish Evelyn's ownership.”

Her final words destroyed me.

“Evie, love should never require you to become smaller so another person can feel large.”

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Luke wiped his eyes.

Grandma continued.

“If Adrian loves you, these documents will never matter.”

She paused.

“If he doesn't, one day they may save you.”

The video ended.

For a long time, none of us spoke.

Then I called Gabriel.

He answered immediately.

“I found Grandma's final archive.”

Silence.

“Evie…”

“I watched the video.”

He didn't speak.

“I am still angry with you.”

“I know.”

“But I don't want to lose another family member because we keep secrets.”

His breathing changed.

“I am sorry.”

“I know.”

That didn't erase the past.

But forgiveness doesn't always begin with erasing pain.

Sometimes it begins with refusing to create more.

“Come over,” I said.

Gabriel arrived twenty minutes later.

He hugged me.

This time, I hugged him back.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

The prosecutor.

Dr. Bell had signed a cooperation agreement.

Richard was being charged in connection with Grandma's death.

Adrian would face conspiracy charges if evidence established participation.

The financial fraud case alone could destroy him.

I expected to feel relief.

Instead, I felt tired.

Then Michael called.

His voice was urgent.

“Evelyn, turn on the financial news.”

I did.

Cole Strategic Group shares were collapsing.

The board had called an emergency meeting.

And because I controlled fifty-two percent of the voting interest, they wanted me there.

Tomorrow morning.

Adrian had spent eleven years telling me I knew nothing about his company.

Tomorrow, I would walk into his boardroom as its controlling owner.

But Michael warned me about one thing.

“Richard still has allies on that board.”

“How many?”

“Enough to try something.”

“Try what?”

May you like

“To take the company away from you before you ever sit down.”
