Chapter 9 - HALE'S LAST CONFESSION

The package arrived under federal escort.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

A key.

And a video file.

Nathan played it.

Detective Raymond Hale appeared onscreen.

He looked exhausted.

Older than he had days earlier.

“If you’re watching this, Vivian has decided I know too much.”

Elena’s hands tightened.

Hale continued.

“I’m not making this to ask forgiveness.

There isn’t any.”

Alejandro appreciated that much.

“I met Vivian Moretti when we were both twenty-three.

I was a patrol officer.

She was already planning ten years ahead.”

Hale described forged documents.

Blackmail.

Evidence tampering.

The staged death of Gabriel Vargas.

The manipulation of Mateo Castillo.

Then he revealed something none of them expected.

“Mateo discovered what Vivian truly was six months before he died.”

Alejandro leaned forward.

Hale continued.

“He planned to remove her from all Castillo affairs.

Vivian found out.”

Alejandro whispered.

“No.”

“Mateo Castillo did not die of a heart attack.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“He was poisoned.”

Alejandro stood abruptly.

His chair fell backward.

Nathan paused the video.

Alejandro walked away.

His father.

For eight years Alejandro had believed Mateo died naturally at home after dinner.

Vivian had been present.

She had comforted Alejandro at the funeral.

He remembered her hand on his shoulder.

Her voice.

Your father loved you more than anything.

Alejandro slammed his fist against the wall.

Elena approached.

He expected her to tell him to calm down.

She didn’t.

She simply stood beside him.

Eventually, he returned.

Nathan resumed.

Hale confessed he had helped falsify toxicology evidence.

Vivian then controlled him with proof of that crime.

Every later crime deepened the trap.

“I told myself I had no choice.

That was a lie.

There are always choices.

I kept choosing myself.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Hale explained that Vivian’s ultimate objective was bigger than Castillo Global.

The company operated logistics networks through forty-two countries.

Ports.

Warehouses.

Customs contracts.

Government transportation deals.

Control of those systems meant power far beyond money.

“She was building something inside Castillo infrastructure.”

Nathan paused.

“What?”

The key in the package answered.

It belonged to a private bank box.

Federal agents opened it hours later.

Inside were shipping manifests.

Nathan examined them.

“These container numbers don’t exist in company databases.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Shadow shipments?”

“Looks like it.”

“What was she moving?”

Nathan’s expression darkened.

“People.”

Silence.

Elena whispered.

“No.”

Documents suggested Vivian’s network used Castillo routes to move undocumented workers and exploit them through fraudulent contracts.

Passports confiscated.

Debt invented.

Victims transferred between properties and companies.

Elena realized something.

“The servants.”

“What?”

“Some staff in the mansion barely spoke.

Vivian said they were temporary workers.”

Alejandro felt sick.

“She wasn’t only imprisoning you.”

“No.”

Nathan immediately expanded the investigation.

By evening federal teams identified three warehouses.

The first was empty.

The second contained documents.

At the third, agents found eleven people living in locked dormitories.

Vivian had evolved far beyond revenge.

This was an organization.

Nathan returned after midnight.

“We have enough to dismantle half the network.”

“Half?”

“The other half is disappearing.”

“Victor?”

“Gone.”

“Vivian?”

“Gone.”

Elena looked toward Marco.

“The island.”

Nathan nodded.

“We think so.”

Alejandro stood.

“Then we go.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Federal operation.”

“My company’s planes can get you there.”

“And Vivian expects that.”

Elena said quietly.

“She expects Alejandro.”

Everyone looked at her.

“So give her what she expects.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Elena.”

“She wants you.”

“No.”

“Not romantically anymore.

Symbolically.”

Elena stepped closer.

“She has spent half her life trying to control you.

If she thinks you’re coming alone, she’ll stay.”

Nathan considered it.

Alejandro hated that he was considering it.

Elena continued.

“We leak that Alejandro has the original Hale confession and wants to trade it for proof Vivian didn’t kill his father.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“She’ll want the file.”

“And she’ll want to tell him she won.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

“You understand her.”

“I had three years to study her.”

They prepared the leak.

Within four hours, Vivian responded through an encrypted channel.

COME ALONE.

SAN AURELIO.

SUNSET TOMORROW.

Alejandro stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

A photograph.

Victor Castillo sat tied to a chair.

Bruised but alive.

Alejandro frowned.

Nathan said.

“Looks like the alliance ended.”

A third message arrived.

Vivian standing beside Victor.

Holding a gun.

YOU WANTED THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
