Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Gabriel Vargas had not died in the boat explosion.
Hale’s confession had been partially false.
Or partially informed.
The explosion happened.
Gabriel survived.
Vivian found him before Isabella did.
Then she made a bargain.
“He helped her?” Elena asked.
Isabella looked devastated.
“At first, he may have had no choice.”
“And later?”
“I don’t know.”
Alejandro disliked that answer.
Nathan uncovered the truth through old banking records.
Gabriel had operated under several aliases.
Money moved through accounts tied to Vivian.
He had signed corporate documents.
Approved offshore transfers.
He was not simply a prisoner.
He was a partner.
Elena sat silently for nearly an hour after learning that.
Her parents were both alive.
Neither had come for her.
Alejandro wanted to comfort her.
But there were no words large enough.
Marco eventually climbed beside her.
“Are you sad?”
“Yes.”
“Because of Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
Marco thought carefully.
“Do I have to like him?”
Elena almost laughed.
“No.”
“Okay.”
That simple answer seemed to help.
The investigation returned to the mainland.
Vivian and Gabriel disappeared.
Victor began cooperating.
Partly to reduce his sentence.
Partly because Vivian had nearly killed him.
He revealed that Gabriel controlled the financial architecture of the organization.
Vivian controlled people.
Gabriel controlled money.
“And the plan?” Nathan asked.
Victor hesitated.
“Global consolidation.”
Alejandro frowned.
“In English.”
“They planned to trigger a liquidity crisis inside Castillo Global.”
“Why?”
“Tank the stock.
Force emergency financing.
Use offshore entities to acquire debt.
Then remove you.”
“And Marco?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“Marco complicated succession.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“So Vivian hid him.”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Victor swallowed.
“Gabriel wanted him dead.”
Alejandro stood so fast the table moved.
Victor raised his hands.
“I objected.”
“You objected?”
“Yes.”
“You helped steal his inheritance!”
“But I never agreed to murder a child.”
“How noble.”
Nathan intervened.
“Sit down.”
Alejandro eventually did.
Victor continued.
“Vivian refused.”
Elena looked surprised.
“Why?”
Victor glanced toward her.
“Because Marco was leverage against you.”
Elena went still.
“She protected him because he kept me obedient.”
“Yes.”
The revelation was twisted.
Vivian had simultaneously endangered Marco and prevented Gabriel from killing him.
Nothing in their family had clean lines anymore.
Victor gave them one more piece.
A meeting scheduled in Chicago.
Gabriel planned to meet three investment partners.
If the financing closed, Castillo Global could lose access to several international credit facilities.
Alejandro decided to attend.
This time legally.
Publicly.
He walked into the boardroom at Castillo Global headquarters at 9:00 Monday morning.
Every conversation stopped.
For three weeks media outlets had reported his disappearance, alleged crimes, Elena’s survival, federal investigations, and Victor’s arrest.
Now Alejandro walked to the head of the table.
He placed both hands on the chair.
“My name is Alejandro Castillo.
For anyone who has forgotten, this is still my company.”
One director stood.
“You’ve been suspended.”
“By a board vote based on fraudulent information.”
“Pending investigation.”
Alejandro smiled.
“Excellent.”
He placed a stack of documents on the table.
“Then let’s investigate.”
Nathan entered with federal attorneys.
Another director went pale.
Within thirty minutes, six board members resigned.
Two were arrested.
One attempted to leave through a stairwell.
Alejandro regained temporary control.
But the company was bleeding.
Banks froze lines.
Customers panicked.
Stock dropped seventeen percent in a day.
Vivian’s plan was working even without her.
That evening Alejandro returned to the secure residence.
Elena watched financial news.
“You lost six billion dollars today.”
“On paper.”
“That doesn’t bother you?”
“Not compared with losing you.”
Elena looked down.
“Don’t make me responsible for that choice.”
“You’re not.”
He sat across from her.
“I spent most of my life believing wealth protected people.”
“And now?”
“It protected the people hurting us.”
Elena nodded.
Alejandro continued.
“If saving the company requires hiding what happened, I’ll let the company burn.”
Elena looked at him.
For the first time, she believed him without hesitation.
Then Marco ran into the room carrying a small notebook.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“I remembered something.”
He opened it.
He had drawn a symbol.
A circle with three vertical lines.
Elena froze.
Alejandro noticed.
“What?”
“I saw that symbol on documents in Vivian’s room.”
Nathan photographed it.
Within an hour analysts identified it.
Not a company logo.
A private investment consortium.
Three Lines Capital.
Its managing partner was listed as Charles Mercer.
But his photograph did not match the man who appeared at corporate events under that name.
Facial recognition found a match from nineteen years earlier.
Gabriel Vargas.
Alejandro stared.
Gabriel had not merely helped Vivian.
He had been building his own financial empire for nearly two decades.
And Three Lines Capital was now Castillo Global’s largest creditor.
Gabriel did not need to inherit Alejandro’s company.
May you like
He already held its debt.
He could simply take it.
