Chapter 2 - THE BOY BEHIND THE DOOR

Daniel’s gun remained pointed toward the floor.

But his finger rested dangerously close to the trigger.

Alejandro moved slightly in front of Elena.

“Put it down.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Mr. Castillo, please listen.”

“You have five seconds.”

Vivian folded her arms.

“Stop pretending you control this situation.”

Alejandro didn’t look at her.

“Four.”

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“Sir, I never wanted anyone hurt.”

“Three.”

“I was told Elena was dangerous.”

“Two.”

“She threatened my family.”

Alejandro finally looked at Vivian.

“Who threatened his family?”

Nobody answered.

“One.”

Daniel dropped the gun.

It hit the carpet.

Alejandro kicked it behind him.

Vivian’s composure cracked.

“You idiot.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“My daughter is twelve years old.

I’m done.”

Alejandro seized his opportunity.

“The key.”

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Vivian lunged forward.

Elena screamed.

But Daniel threw the key.

Alejandro caught it.

He unlocked the steel door.

Elena rushed inside.

The room beyond was not a bedroom.

It was a storage chamber converted into living quarters.

One small bed.

A desk.

Shelves of books.

A bathroom behind a partition.

No windows.

A boy crouched beside the overturned desk.

He looked about seven years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A thin frame beneath an oversized sweater.

Blood ran from a cut near his eyebrow where the desk had apparently struck him.

Elena dropped to her knees.

“Marco.”

The boy threw himself into her arms.

Alejandro stood motionless.

The child clung to Elena with desperate familiarity.

Not like a servant.

Not like a stranger.

Like family.

Elena pressed her lips against his hair.

“You’re okay.

I’m here.”

Marco looked over her shoulder.

His gaze settled on Alejandro.

The boy froze.

Alejandro’s heart began pounding.

There was something about his face.

Something painfully familiar.

The shape of his eyes.

The small crease between his eyebrows.

The way his left eyebrow lifted slightly when frightened.

A Castillo trait.

Alejandro had seen it in photographs of himself as a child.

He whispered.

“Elena.”

She held Marco tighter.

Alejandro could barely form the question.

“Is he mine?”

Vivian appeared in the doorway.

“Don’t.”

Elena looked up.

“Yes.”

Alejandro’s entire world stopped.

Marco stared at him.

Alejandro felt the floor disappear beneath him.

“How old?”

“Seven.”

Seven.

The math hit him immediately.

Elena had been pregnant before she disappeared.

She had never told him.

Or maybe she had never had the chance.

Alejandro knelt slowly.

“Marco.”

The boy buried his face against Elena.

“It’s okay,” she whispered.

Alejandro’s throat closed.

He had spent three years grieving a wife.

He had unknowingly spent seven years missing a son.

“Why didn’t I know?”

Elena looked at Vivian.

“Because she made sure you didn’t.”

Vivian laughed bitterly.

“You’re going to believe her?”

Alejandro rose.

“I just found a child locked behind a steel door.”

“He isn’t your son.”

Elena stood.

“Yes, he is.”

“You have no proof.”

Marco suddenly pulled something from beneath his sweater.

A chain.

At the end was a small gold pendant.

Alejandro recognized it instantly.

His mother’s Saint Christopher medal.

He had given it to Elena on their first wedding anniversary.

Alejandro stared.

Elena whispered.

“I gave it to him the night he was born.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

Alejandro stepped toward her.

“What happened seven years ago?”

Vivian said nothing.

Elena answered.

“I was going to tell you I was pregnant.”

Alejandro looked back.

Her eyes were distant now.

Remembering.

“The night of your father’s foundation gala.

I had the test in my purse.”

Alejandro remembered that night.

Elena had vanished halfway through the party.

He had been told she had become ill and gone home.

She continued.

“Vivian found it.”

Alejandro turned.

Vivian didn’t deny it.

Elena’s voice trembled.

“She told me you didn’t want children.

She showed me emails from you.”

“What emails?”

“Messages saying a pregnancy would ruin everything.

That you were planning to leave me.”

“I never wrote that.”

“I know that now.”

“Why did you believe them?”

“Because that same night I saw you with another woman.”

Alejandro frowned.

“What woman?”

“Elise Moretti.”

Vivian’s younger sister.

Alejandro remembered Elise approaching him at the gala.

She had stumbled.

He had caught her before she fell.

Nothing more.

Elena shook her head.

“There were photographs.”

Alejandro understood.

Manipulated images.

Manufactured messages.

A carefully constructed betrayal.

“But that doesn’t explain seven years.”

Elena looked at Marco.

“I left the mansion that night.

Vivian followed me.”

“What happened?”

“My car went off the road.”

Alejandro stared.

The accident.

He remembered.

Elena had been hospitalized after a crash seven years earlier.

Vivian had been the first person at the hospital.

“She told doctors she was my sister,” Elena said.

“She controlled who saw me.”

Alejandro felt sick.

“And after Marco was born?”

“I was told he died.”

Marco looked up.

Alejandro’s fists clenched.

Elena continued.

“Years later I found a payment from a private clinic.

I started investigating.

I found Marco.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

Alejandro stared.

“He was here?”

“In a hidden apartment on the property.

Vivian had been raising him under another name.”

“Why?”

“I didn’t know.

Not then.”

Vivian slowly smiled.

That smile terrified Elena.

Alejandro saw it.

“What?”

Vivian leaned against the doorway.

“You still haven’t figured it out.”

“Figured out what?”

“Why Marco mattered.”

Alejandro looked at his son.

Then he understood.

Castillo Global.

The family trust.

His father’s estate plan.

Any biological child of Alejandro automatically became beneficiary to twenty-five percent of the controlling family shares.

Marco was not merely a hidden child.

He was worth billions.

Vivian said softly.

“When Elena discovered him three years ago, everything became complicated.”

Elena hugged Marco tightly.

“She tried to kill us.”

Vivian’s smile disappeared.

Alejandro looked at Elena.

“What happened the night you vanished?”

Before Elena could answer, sirens approached outside.

Alejandro frowned.

He hadn’t called police.

Daniel hadn’t.

Vivian looked toward the window.

And smiled again.

“They’re here.”

“Who?”

Vivian straightened her dress.

“The police.”

Thirty seconds later, heavy footsteps thundered through the entrance hall.

A voice shouted.

“Alejandro Castillo!”

Alejandro stepped into the corridor.

Four officers appeared.

Behind them walked Detective Raymond Hale.

The same detective who had led Elena’s missing-person investigation three years earlier.

Hale raised his weapon.

“Alejandro Castillo, step away from Elena Moretti.”

Alejandro stared.

“My wife’s name is Castillo.”

Hale’s expression remained cold.

“Elena Castillo has been legally declared incompetent for over two years.”

Elena went pale.

Hale continued.

“And according to court records, Vivian Moretti is her court-appointed guardian.”

Alejandro looked at Vivian.

Vivian smiled.

May you like

Then Hale delivered the final blow.

“And you, Mr. Castillo, are currently trespassing on property you no longer legally own.”
