Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE IN THE SNOW

Snow covered the Vargas estate like a burial shroud.
Elena remembered summers there.
Her father grilling outside.
Her mother playing piano.
Vivian standing at the edge of photographs, never truly included.
Now the windows glowed against the mountains.
Elena and Isabella approached openly.
Federal teams moved through the forest.
Alejandro remained at command with Nathan.
This time, Elena wore a wire.
Vivian opened the front door herself.
“Welcome home.”
Elena stepped inside.
The entrance hall remained almost unchanged.
Same staircase.
Same fireplace.
Same grandfather clock.
Except cameras filled the corners.
Gabriel sat in the dining room.
Hands bound.
Blood dried near his temple.
Isabella stopped when she saw him.
Twelve years of grief crossed her face.
“Gabriel.”
He looked at her.
“Bella.”
Isabella slapped him.
Elena almost smiled.
Gabriel accepted it.
“I deserved that.”
“You deserve several more.”
Vivian rolled her eyes.
“Touching.”
Elena faced her.
“You wanted us here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vivian walked toward an old family portrait.
Gabriel.
Isabella.
Elena.
Vivian was not in it.
She pointed.
“This.”
Elena understood.
“A picture?”
“A lie.”
“You wanted to be in our family.”
“I was in the family.”
“You were Dad’s daughter.”
“But never publicly.”
Vivian turned toward Gabriel.
“He paid for schools.
Apartments.
Cars.
Anything except a name.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“I was a coward.”
“Yes.”
Isabella stared at him.
“You told me Vivian was the daughter of a former employee.”
“I know.”
“You brought your own child into our house and made her watch another daughter receive everything.”
“I thought keeping distance protected everyone.”
Vivian laughed.
“Everyone keeps using protection to describe cowardice.”
Elena hated that Vivian was occasionally right.
Vivian faced her.
“When your father died—or when you thought he did—you inherited the Vargas trust.”
“Yes.”
“I got nothing.”
“You had already stolen millions.”
“Compensation.”
“No.
Theft.”
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“I spent years watching you receive a life you didn’t even appreciate.”
“So you took it.”
“Yes.”
“My husband.”
“I tried.”
“My child.”
“I preserved him.”
“You imprisoned him.”
“To control you.”
“My daughter Sofia.”
Vivian smiled strangely.
“Sofia was supposed to be mine.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“I thought if Alejandro had a child connected to me, eventually he would see us as family.”
“You used someone else’s body to create a child without his consent.”
Vivian’s eyes flashed.
“Do not moralize to me.”
“I’m not.”
Elena stepped closer.
“I’m telling you Sofia is not yours.”
Vivian struck Elena.
Isabella moved.
A guard raised his weapon.
Elena touched her cheek.
Then looked back at Vivian.
“That felt better when I couldn’t hit back, didn’t it?”
Vivian hesitated.
Elena punched her.
Hard.
Vivian fell against the table.
At the command center, Alejandro almost cheered.
Nathan glanced at him.
“Professional environment.”
“Sorry.”
Inside, Vivian wiped blood from her lip.
Then smiled.
“There you are.”
Elena stared.
“You always wanted me angry.”
“No.
I wanted you honest.”
“Fine.”
Elena’s voice rose.
“I hate you.”
Vivian absorbed it.
“I hate what you did to Marco.
I hate what you did to Sofia.
I hate the years you stole.
I hate that you made me afraid of footsteps in my own house.”
Her voice cracked.
“But you don’t own that fear anymore.”
Vivian’s smile disappeared.
Elena stepped closer.
“And I will never become you just because I survived you.”
Gabriel suddenly shouted.
“Now!”
He kicked the nearest guard.
Isabella grabbed his weapon.
Federal teams breached the windows.
Chaos erupted.
Vivian ran upstairs.
Elena followed.
In her childhood bedroom, Vivian disappeared behind a bookcase.
Elena entered the hidden control room.
Hundreds of screens.
Files.
Servers.
Vivian stood beside a terminal.
Her finger over a command.
“Stop.”
Elena froze.
Vivian smiled.
“If this network dies, so do thousands of records.”
“What records?”
“Identity documents.
Financial histories.
Witness files.”
Nathan’s voice whispered through Elena’s earpiece.
“Keep her talking.”
Vivian continued.
“You expose me, and innocent people suffer too.”
Elena looked at the servers.
“You built the system that trapped them.”
“And I’m the only person who can untangle it.”
“No.”
Vivian frowned.
Elena smiled.
“You made the mistake every control addict makes.”
“What?”
“You assumed nobody learned while you were watching them.”
Elena lifted her wrist.
A tiny device blinked.
Data transfer.
Daniel had installed it when she entered.
Vivian stared at the servers.
Nathan shouted through comms.
“We have it.”
Vivian screamed and slammed the deletion command.
Too late.
Federal servers already had a mirrored copy.
Agents burst through the door.
Vivian turned toward Elena.
For the first time, there was nowhere to run.
Then the entire house shook.
An explosion thundered below.
Lights died.
Smoke flooded the hallway.
Elena heard Alejandro’s voice in her earpiece.
“Elena!”
“I’m okay.”
Then Vivian grabbed her.
A knife pressed against Elena’s throat.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Vivian whispered into her ear.
“We leave together.”
May you like
Elena stared toward the dark doorway.
And somewhere downstairs, Sofia began screaming.
