Chapter 9 - The Island House

The storm arrived before we reached Wisconsin.

Cold September rain swept across Lake Geneva.

Federal agents coordinated with local authorities.

Boats approached from two directions.

Alexander was ordered to remain on shore.

He ignored the instruction until I physically stepped in front of him.

“If Claire is inside, seeing you charging into an armed situation will not help her.”

“She is carrying my child.”

“And Emma is standing behind you watching.”

That stopped him.

He looked at my daughter.

Emma had refused to stay at the hotel without me, so two agents kept her inside the command vehicle.

She gave Alexander a tiny wave.

He stepped back.

The first tactical team reached the island at 2:11 a.m.

The summer house was dark.

One window glowed on the second floor.

Agents entered.

Gunfire erupted less than a minute later.

Alexander flinched.

I gripped his arm.

The radio exploded with overlapping voices.

One suspect down.

Second suspect fleeing rear.

Medic requested.

Then:

“Female patient located.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

“Pregnant.

Conscious.

Condition unstable.”

Claire.

They had found her.

But Vanessa was gone.

Michael was gone.

Grant was gone.

Claire was brought to shore on a stretcher.

Alexander stood twenty feet away.

For three years he had imagined this woman dead.

Now she was alive in front of him.

Older.

Thinner.

Terrified.

Pregnant with their child.

Her eyes found him.

For a moment neither moved.

Then Claire whispered, “You kept the ring.”

Alexander broke.

He fell to his knees beside the stretcher.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire reached toward him.

Her hand trembled.

“Not here.”

He understood.

This was not a reunion.

Not yet.

Too much had happened.

She was taken by ambulance to a secure hospital.

Doctors stabilized her.

The baby was healthy.

Thirty-four weeks.

Claire had been drugged repeatedly but not enough to cause permanent damage.

She asked to speak with investigators before sleeping.

I expected her to focus on Vanessa.

She did not.

“Michael is not in charge.”

The lead agent frowned.

“Who is?”

Claire looked at Alexander.

“Grant.”

Alexander shook his head.

“Grant worked for my father.”

“He worked for himself.”

Claire explained that Grant Mercer discovered weaknesses in old Whitmore family trusts more than a decade earlier.

He learned that certain voting shares could be redirected through dependents, guardians, medical incapacity, and death-beneficiary clauses.

At first, he exploited small estates.

Then he built Northbridge.

Michael joined for money.

Cynthia joined because her family was bankrupt.

Vanessa joined because she wanted status and revenge.

“Revenge for what?” I asked.

Claire looked at Alexander.

“Whitmore Holdings destroyed their father.”

Alexander frowned.

The Vale family had owned a regional construction company.

Whitmore acquired it after a fraud investigation.

Their father later killed himself.

The sisters blamed Alexander’s family.

Grant used that anger.

He promised them the Whitmore empire.

Claire uncovered the financial network.

Grant arranged the crash.

“But you survived,” Alexander said.

A retired nurse found Claire half-frozen downstream.

Claire begged her not to report the rescue.

For years she lived under an alias.

Then she discovered frozen embryos from her marriage had not been destroyed.

One had been transferred without permission into a surrogate.

Claire tracked the clinic.

The surrogate disappeared.

The embryo remained.

She made a decision.

She transferred it to herself.

Alexander stared at her.

“You chose to have our child?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you were still married to the woman who helped destroy my life.

I wasn’t planning to come back.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because I found evidence they were going to kill you.”

Silence.

Claire reached beneath the blanket.

An agent had recovered her personal bracelet.

Inside a hollow clasp was a tiny memory card.

She had hidden it for months.

The card contained names.

Accounts.

Recorded conversations.

Enough evidence to dismantle Northbridge.

But one file frightened investigators more than the others.

It was titled FINAL SUCCESSION.

Inside was a timeline.

Vanessa announces pregnancy.

Alexander transfers shares.

Child born.

Claire eliminated.

Alexander dies in boating accident.

Eleanor dies six months later.

Board votes emergency control to acting trustee.

Guardian activates voting block.

Whitmore Holdings absorbed by Mercer Capital.

The final date was tomorrow.

Alexander looked at the screen.

“Tomorrow?”

Claire’s face went pale.

She grabbed his wrist.

May you like

“Where is your mother?”
