Chapter 14 - The Father’s Vault

Grant had help.

No one escaped a federal transport route by improvisation.

Someone knew the schedule.

Someone had access to law-enforcement systems.

Claire’s old fear had been correct.

Northbridge had survived because it did not exist only inside Whitmore.

It existed in institutions.

Contractors.

Police departments.

Hospitals.

Banks.

Law firms.

Not everyone was knowingly involved.

Some were simply paid.

Others were compromised.

A few were loyal.

Grant contacted Alexander six hours after escaping.

“Come to the old Chicago Trust Building.”

The building had belonged to Whitmore until the 1980s.

It now stood mostly empty awaiting redevelopment.

Grant wanted no police.

No agents.

Only Alexander.

And Claire.

Alexander refused to bring her.

Grant sent a photograph.

A metal vault door.

Beside it sat Michael Vale.

Bound to a chair.

Blood ran from his forehead.

Grant had abducted him.

Michael knew too much.

Grant intended to clean the final witness.

Claire recognized the vault.

Charles Whitmore had once kept private records beneath the building.

The restitution reserve was probably there.

Federal agents planned surveillance.

Alexander and Claire insisted on going.

I went too.

Not because anyone invited me.

Because Grant had spent six years making me part of his story.

I wanted to see how it ended.

The basement smelled of concrete and rust.

Grant waited in front of the vault.

He held a pistol.

Michael sat twenty feet away.

Alive.

Barely.

Grant looked at Claire.

“You always were difficult to kill.”

Claire stared at him.

“You always needed someone else to do it.”

That struck him.

Grant turned toward Alexander.

“Your father left a vault.”

“I know.”

“He left money for people he cheated.”

“I know.”

“He left my mother a place in this family after she died.”

Alexander said nothing.

Grant laughed bitterly.

“He was always generous too late.”

He placed his thumb against the scanner.

One authorization accepted.

The second scanner requested a Whitmore primary heir.

Alexander stepped forward.

Grant aimed the gun.

“Do it.”

“If I open it, the money goes to victims.”

“Not if I redirect it first.”

“You can’t.”

Grant smiled.

“Your father built the system.

I perfected it.”

Alexander placed his hand on the scanner.

The vault opened.

Inside were paper ledgers.

Gold certificates.

Hard drives.

And one sealed box.

Grant pushed Alexander aside and opened it.

Inside was a video cassette.

Nothing else.

His face changed.

“No.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“You spent fifteen years chasing a recording.”

Grant tore through the box.

No access key.

No account numbers.

Then a monitor mounted inside the vault activated automatically.

Charles Whitmore appeared on screen.

Older.

Ill.

Looking directly into the camera.

“If this vault has opened, then Alexander and Rebecca’s descendant are standing together.”

Grant froze.

Charles continued.

“Northbridge began as my sin.

I used it to buy land through deception, to hide debts, and to protect Whitmore from consequences it deserved.”

Alexander’s eyes filled with anger.

“My daughter Rebecca paid for my cowardice.

I hid her because I feared scandal.

If her child or grandchild sees this, understand that your anger is earned.

But what you do with that anger belongs to you.”

Grant stared.

The recording explained that the restitution fund was never in the vault.

It had been transferred years earlier to an independent foundation.

No Whitmore could control it.

No Mercer could steal it.

Victims would receive the money automatically if Northbridge corruption was proven.

Grant had spent years hunting a fortune he could never possess.

The only thing left inside the vault was evidence.

Enough to destroy Charles Whitmore’s reputation.

And enough to expose Northbridge completely.

Grant raised the pistol.

“So this is what I inherit?”

Alexander looked at him.

“The truth.”

Grant fired at the monitor.

The screen exploded.

Agents moved from the stairwell.

Grant grabbed Claire.

Alexander lunged.

The gun fired again.

Michael screamed.

I saw Grant drag Claire toward a side door.

I saw Alexander hit the ground.

For half a second, I thought he had been shot.

Then he stood.

Grant fled into the old tunnel system beneath the building.

Claire with him.

Again.

But this time she was not helpless.

As Grant pulled her through the doorway, she looked directly at me.

Then she dropped her bracelet.

May you like

The tracker inside it was still active.
