Chapter 17 - Eleanor’s Last Secret

Alexander confronted his mother from his hospital bed.
Eleanor did not deny filing the petition.
“I am protecting the child.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
“His mother?”
“Claire spent three years legally dead.”
“She was hiding from people trying to kill her.”
“She also secretly implanted our embryo without your consent.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“That is between Claire and me.”
“No.
Not when the child controls Whitmore voting shares.”
There it was.
The company.
Even after kidnapping.
Fraud.
Poisoning.
Attempted murder.
The Whitmore empire remained in the room.
Eleanor believed she was different from Grant because she wanted to protect the company.
But control used the same language no matter who spoke it.
For the first time, Alexander saw that clearly.
He called Daniel.
“Dissolve the prenatal trust.”
Daniel hesitated.
“That will reduce your voting control.”
“I know.”
“You could lose the company.”
“I know.”
Eleanor stared.
“You cannot make this decision emotionally.”
Alexander looked at her.
“My son was born in a tunnel because people tried to turn him into a corporate instrument.
That ends now.”
He transferred the child’s shares back into a neutral independent trust with no voting power until adulthood.
No guardian could control them.
No parent.
No executive.
No Whitmore.
The move cost Alexander effective majority control of the company.
He did it anyway.
Eleanor withdrew her petition the next day.
But her secret did not end there.
Claire asked why Eleanor had acted so quickly.
Daniel investigated.
He found that Eleanor had maintained a private file on Claire for years.
Surveillance photographs.
Bank records.
Medical updates.
She had known Claire survived.
Not immediately.
But for more than a year.
Alexander stared at his mother in disbelief.
“You knew?”
Eleanor did not answer.
“You knew Claire was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because she asked me not to.”
Claire looked stunned.
“What?”
Eleanor opened a drawer.
She removed letters.
Claire recognized her own handwriting.
During the first year in hiding, Claire had secretly contacted Eleanor.
Not Alexander.
She feared Alexander’s phones were compromised.
She asked Eleanor to watch him from a distance.
To keep Grant away.
To say nothing.
Then communication stopped.
Eleanor believed Claire had chosen permanent disappearance.
When Claire returned six months ago, Eleanor knew nothing.
Her private investigators lost her.
The access key used at Room 614 had indeed been Eleanor’s stolen key.
Eleanor had been guilty of secrecy.
Not kidnapping.
Alexander looked at Claire.
“You trusted my mother more than me.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I trusted no one.
That was the problem.”
Their marriage had failed before the crash because both had begun hiding things.
Northbridge exploited the distance.
Secrets made them easy to separate.
Now the truth hurt more than either expected.
But at least it was truth.
Claire did not move back into Whitmore House.
She rented a secured residence after leaving the hospital.
Alexander visited the baby.
Never without permission.
He did not ask Claire to forgive him.
She did not ask him to forget what she had done.
They began with honesty.
Slowly.
Awkwardly.
Painfully.
Vanessa’s trial preparations began.
She faced fraud, kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, identity theft, and homicide charges connected to Laura Bennett.
Cynthia accepted a cooperation agreement.
Michael did too.
Grant refused every deal.
Margaret pleaded guilty to attempted poisoning and kidnapping.
She also gave prosecutors decades of documents.
Northbridge collapsed.
Then prosecutors found a final encrypted file.
A list of payments made during the last eighteen months.
One payment appeared every month.
$25,000.
Recipient:
D. PRICE CONSULTING.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
The family attorney who had helped us from the beginning.
Daniel Price went pale.
Alexander whispered, “Tell me that isn’t you.”
May you like
Daniel said nothing.
