Chapter 7 - The Baby They Needed

Dr. Hale talked for six hours.

He admitted falsifying Vanessa’s medical records.

He admitted using Claire’s real bloodwork and scans.

He admitted that Cynthia paid him.

But he insisted he had not known the full plan in the beginning.

Vanessa needed believable pregnancy documentation because Alexander’s attorneys demanded medical verification before finalizing the trust.

A fake belly could fool society photographs.

It could not fool lawyers.

Claire solved that problem.

Her pregnancy followed almost the same timeline Vanessa needed.

“So they kidnapped Claire for her medical records?” I asked.

Dr. Hale shook his head.

“No.

They kidnapped her because she came back.”

“Why did she come back?”

“She wanted Alexander.”

Alexander looked away.

Dr. Hale continued.

“Claire had been living under an alias.

She survived the crash.

Someone pulled her from the river.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.

She refused to tell me.”

She spent nearly three years hiding because she believed Michael and Grant had access to law enforcement, corporate security, and her finances.

Then she learned she was pregnant.

That changed everything.

“How?” Alexander asked.

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

Alexander stared at him.

“How is Claire pregnant?”

Dr. Hale hesitated.

“The father is not listed in her chart.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

I stepped in.

“That isn’t relevant right now.”

“It is to me.”

“No.

Finding her is relevant.”

For a moment I thought he would argue.

Then he nodded.

Dr. Hale explained that Claire returned to Chicago six months earlier to expose the conspiracy.

She contacted Cynthia because she believed Cynthia might turn against Michael.

It was a mistake.

Cynthia brought her to the Whitmore Grand under the promise of protection.

Then Michael arrived.

Claire was drugged.

She spent weeks moving between the hotel, the Lakeshore clinic, and private properties controlled by Northbridge.

When Vanessa realized Claire’s pregnancy could validate the fake one, the plan changed.

They kept her alive.

“And after the baby is born?” Daniel asked.

Dr. Hale closed his eyes.

“They register the child as Vanessa’s.”

Alexander went still.

“How?”

“Private delivery.

False certificate.

Money.

You’d be surprised what money can create.”

“And Claire?”

Dr. Hale said nothing.

He did not have to.

Vanessa intended to eliminate the only person who could prove the baby was not hers.

Then she would return home with a real infant.

Alexander’s household would believe the fake pregnancy had become a real child.

The trust would remain valid.

The baby would become the legal Whitmore heir.

And later, if Alexander died, Vanessa would control the estate as the child’s mother.

Cynthia’s guardian clause gave them a second route to the shares.

They had designed the scheme so that whether the child lived or died, control stayed with them.

But one question remained.

Why Claire’s child?

If the baby was not Alexander’s, DNA would eventually expose everything.

Dr. Hale looked at Alexander.

“That’s the part Claire refused to tell us.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

“She said the baby would pass any Whitmore DNA test.”

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered, “Oh my God.”

Alexander turned.

His mother looked toward him.

“Your embryos.”

His face changed.

Years earlier, Alexander and Claire had undergone fertility treatment.

They had stored embryos.

After Claire’s presumed death, Alexander believed they had been destroyed at his request.

They had not.

Dr. Hale confirmed it.

One embryo had been transferred into Claire nine months earlier.

Without Alexander’s authorization.

“How?” he whispered.

“Grant arranged access.”

Daniel stared at the doctor.

“Then this child actually is Alexander’s.”

“Yes.”

Everything became darker.

Claire was carrying Alexander’s biological child.

Vanessa planned to steal it.

That night, investigators traced a payment from Northbridge to a private birthing center near Lake Geneva.

Agents arrived.

Empty.

But the staff had left recently.

There were still warm coffee cups.

Medical equipment was gone.

So was Claire.

In the trash, they found a torn scheduling sheet.

One handwritten note remained.

MOVE PATIENT WEDNESDAY.

Wednesday was tomorrow.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

It contained a photograph.

Claire was sitting in the back seat of a car.

Her face was bruised.

Her hands were bound.

Across her knees rested her enormous pregnant belly.

Beside her sat Vanessa.

No fake pillow this time.

Vanessa was smiling.

The message beneath the photo read:

ALEXANDER CAN HAVE HIS WIFE OR HIS CHILD.

May you like

NOT BOTH.
