Chapter 18 - The Brother I Almost Lost

The bullet missed Luca’s heart.
Barely.
Surgery lasted five hours.
I sat beside my mother.
Ryan paced.
Marco stared at a wall.
Dante lay outside the operating room doors until hospital staff finally gave up trying to move him.
When Luca woke, I was asleep in a chair.
“Emma.”
I opened my eyes.
“You idiot.”
His voice was weak.
“That’s touching.”
“You walked into a building with a man who wanted to kill you.”
“So did you.”
“I had a reason.”
“So did I.”
I laughed despite myself.
Then cried.
He reached toward me.
I took his hand.
Hanley’s recorded confession opened everything.
Old cases.
Payments.
Deaths.
Officials.
The final remnants of Carlo’s network collapsed.
Carlo accepted a plea agreement and gave investigators the remaining names.
Not from remorse.
To protect Sofia and Vanessa.
Perhaps even terrible fathers could love their daughters in complicated ways.
Vanessa visited Luca once.
She stood beside his hospital bed.
“I did love you.”
Luca looked at her.
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know that too.”
There was no reconciliation.
No dramatic kiss.
Some damage should not be romanticized.
Vanessa left.
Later, she testified.
Sofia married Daniel Caldwell anyway.
Quietly.
Without Luca.
Without me.
And that was fine.
Six weeks later Luca returned home.
Dante greeted him so violently the nurses nearly panicked.
I laughed for the first time in days.
Luca recovered.
Slowly.
The Moretti legal businesses were reorganized.
Employees received ownership shares.
The restitution trust became independent.
I refused Luca’s offer of a mansion.
“I already live in one.”
“You live here because your room is protected.”
“I live here because Mom likes your kitchen.”
My mother shouted from the next room:
“It has two ovens!”
Ryan added:
“And a movie theater!”
Luca looked betrayed.
“My family has been bought by appliances.”
I smiled.
Family.
The word no longer felt impossible.
Then one afternoon, while sorting through my father’s final box, I found an unopened envelope.
Not from Michael.
From Salvatore.
Addressed:
TO EMMA, WHEN SHE DECIDES WHO SHE IS.
Inside was one sentence.
Blood explains where you came from.
Love explains where you belong.
I sat with that for a long time.
Michael Sullivan was still my father.
Kathleen Sullivan was still my mother.
Ryan was still my brother.
And now Luca was too.
Nothing had been replaced.
My family had expanded.
That night Dante scratched at the study door.
I opened it.
He carried something in his mouth.
Bruno’s old collar.
I had no idea where he found it.
Luca stared.
Then laughed.
“No.”
I looked at the collar.
“What?”
“If there is another secret hidden in that thing, I’m burning the house down.”
I examined it.
No tag.
No key.
No hidden message.
Just old leather.
May you like
For once, Bruno had left us nothing to solve.
Only something to remember.
