Chapter 11 - The Lie Inside the Truth

Panic spread inside the gala.
The locked doors were discovered within seconds.
Luca’s security moved quickly.
No one was trapped for long.
But Carlo was gone.
Again.
The phone remained.
On it was a new video.
Salvatore Moretti.
Recorded hours before his death.
“My son will hate me for this.”
Luca stared.
Salvatore continued.
“But if Carlo believes I’m dead, Luca survives.”
The recording described a plan.
Salvatore had intended to fake his death.
Dr. Caldwell was supposed to sedate him.
Anthony and Carlo believed they were helping remove him from power.
But Salvatore planned to disappear, gather evidence, then return.
Something went wrong.
The sedation was real.
The crash was staged.
But the internal injuries were not.
Someone changed the plan.
Someone ensured Salvatore actually died.
Who?
The answer existed in another recording.
But Carlo had it.
He offered a trade.
Thomas Reed for Vanessa.
Vanessa looked at Luca.
“I’ll go.”
“No.”
“He’s my father.”
“That doesn’t make him safer.”
“It makes me the only person he might hesitate to kill.”
Luca looked at me.
I knew what he was thinking.
Family had become a weapon in every direction.
We devised a trap.
The exchange happened at an abandoned rail yard.
Vanessa walked alone.
Thomas appeared tied to a chair.
Carlo stepped from the shadows.
Anthony Russo stood beside him.
Federal agents watched from surrounding buildings.
Vanessa stopped twenty feet away.
“Let him go.”
Carlo smiled.
“You disappointed me.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I finally stopped disappointing myself.”
His face changed.
It was the first time Vanessa looked free.
Carlo raised his weapon.
Luca moved.
Everything happened at once.
Agents shouted.
Anthony ran.
Carlo grabbed Vanessa.
Thomas kicked his chair backward.
Lights exploded across the rail yard.
I saw Anthony running toward an SUV.
Dante, who had tracked us despite being ordered to remain in the vehicle, broke free.
He chased Anthony.
The old criminal stumbled.
Agents captured him.
Carlo released Vanessa when he realized he was surrounded.
He surrendered.
Not because he regretted anything.
Because he believed he still had leverage.
And he did.
In his coat, agents found a flash drive.
One label.
SALVATORE.
The final recording.
But before we could play it, Carlo smiled at Luca.
“You still don’t know who betrayed your father.”
Luca looked at him.
“We will.”
May you like
Carlo’s smile widened.
“When you do, you’ll wish you hadn’t.”
