Chapter 12 - The Last Recording

The recording was played in the Moretti study.
Federal agents were present.
So were Luca, Marco, Vanessa, Thomas, my mother, and me.
Salvatore’s voice began.
“The plan failed because someone changed Caldwell’s dosage.”
The room became completely still.
“I do not know whether I will survive.”
A labored breath.
“But I know who had access to the medication.”
Then he named the person.
Anthony Russo.
Carlo had lied.
Anthony had changed the dose.
But Salvatore continued.
“Anthony acted because someone told him Luca would never accept the new structure I intended to create.”
Luca frowned.
“What structure?”
Salvatore answered.
“I intended to dissolve our criminal operations.”
Marco stared at the floor.
The Moretti organization had begun generations earlier.
Salvatore wanted out.
Legal businesses.
No trafficking.
No extortion.
No illegal money.
He wanted Luca to inherit something clean.
Anthony saw that as betrayal.
Carlo saw it as financial disaster.
So they killed him.
Michael Sullivan collected the evidence.
Then they killed Michael.
The truth was simple.
That somehow made it worse.
No grand conspiracy beyond greed and fear.
No hidden justification.
Men wanted money.
Men wanted power.
Two fathers died because of it.
Luca stood.
He walked outside.
I followed.
He stood beside Bruno in the garden.
“My father wanted me out.”
“Yes.”
“I spent seven years becoming exactly what he was trying to stop.”
“You didn’t know.”
“That doesn’t change what I did know.”
He looked at me.
“I knew what my businesses were.”
I didn’t excuse him.
He didn’t ask me to.
Instead, I asked:
“What are you going to do now?”
He looked toward the mansion.
“Finish what he started.”
Over the next weeks, Luca shut down illegal operations.
He cooperated with federal prosecutors.
Not without consequences.
Rivals moved in.
Money disappeared.
Old allies left.
Some threatened him.
Marco stayed.
Thomas stayed.
I stayed.
Vanessa moved into protective custody.
Our engagement dinner became gossip across Chicago society.
Nobody knew the real story.
They only knew Vanessa Bellini vanished from public life and Luca Moretti abruptly canceled their wedding.
Bruno recovered.
Slowly.
Dante became his shadow.
Then one morning Bruno led me to the garden.
He stopped beside an old oak tree.
He dug weakly.
I helped.
Six inches beneath the soil was another metal box.
I laughed.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Inside was one final letter.
From Salvatore.
To both his children.
Luca and Emma.
My hands shook.
But before I opened it, an explosion sounded from the front gate.
Luca ran outside.
A black SUV burned near the entrance.
No one had been inside.
On the lawn stood a message painted in red.
May you like
ANTHONY WASN’T ALONE.
And federal agents informed us Anthony Russo had been murdered in custody less than an hour earlier.
