Chapter 13 - THE SECOND PLAN

Monroe had not disappeared without preparation.
Within forty-eight hours, three false stories appeared online.
Clara Bennett Accused in Cole Family Scandal.
Questions Surround Nanny’s Relationship With Billionaire Employer.
Sources Claim Internal Fight Preceded Child’s Staircase Accident.
The articles used anonymous sources.
Old photographs.
Partial truths.
And carefully edited information.
Clara was transformed from hero to manipulator.
Vanessa became a distressed former fiancée.
Adrian became a wealthy widower under Clara’s influence.
The objective was obvious.
Destroy Clara publicly.
Adrian’s legal team prepared aggressive responses.
Clara stopped them.
“No.”
He stared.
“They’re lying about you.”
“Yes.”
“I can shut this down.”
“You can threaten websites.”
“You can file suits.”
“You can force corrections.”
“And then tomorrow ten more appear.”
Adrian knew she was right.
“What do you want to do?”
“Tell the truth.”
So they did.
Not everything.
Nothing that compromised the investigation.
But Adrian released the unedited staircase footage through his attorney.
Along with a statement.
Clara Bennett saved my daughter’s life.
Any claim suggesting otherwise is false.
I reacted to a lie without verifying the facts.
My actions toward Ms. Bennett were wrong.
I accept responsibility for them completely.
Clara read the statement before publication.
“You don’t need to mention what you did.”
“Yes, I do.”
“It will hurt your reputation.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Good.”
She frowned.
“That isn’t accountability either.”
“No.”
He corrected himself.
“But protecting my reputation by hiding what happened would repeat the same problem.”
Clara studied him.
Then nodded.
The video spread rapidly.
Public opinion shifted.
But Monroe escalated.
A former employee suddenly accused Clara of stealing jewelry from the Cole estate.
Security records disproved it.
Then an anonymous complaint alleged Clara endangered Emma months earlier.
Medical records disproved that.
Each false attack forced investigators to reveal more evidence.
Monroe was flushing information into public view.
Marcus realized why.
“She wants to know what we have.”
Every response exposed another piece.
So they stopped responding.
Silence became strategy.
Then Vanessa requested to speak with Clara.
Clara refused.
Vanessa asked again.
Finally she sent a handwritten message through her attorney.
I know what happened to Megan.
Clara agreed.
The meeting took place inside a federal detention facility.
Vanessa sat behind thick glass.
Clara held the telephone.
For several seconds neither woman spoke.
Then Clara said, “Start talking.”
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“I never met Megan.”
“Then don’t waste my time.”
“I saw the file.”
“What file?”
“Monroe’s.”
Clara’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“She kept files on everyone Bellweather removed.”
“Removed.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Megan found evidence linking Thomas Cole to illegal political payments.”
“What happened?”
“Monroe arranged the crash.”
Clara’s face went still.
“She wasn’t found after a crash.”
“Because Megan survived it.”
Clara stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked up.
“The body recovered from the river wasn’t Megan.”
Clara nearly dropped the phone.
“Dental records confirmed it.”
“Records Monroe controlled.”
“No.”
“Clara.”
“No.”
Vanessa leaned closer to the glass.
“Your sister was alive after you buried her.”
Clara stood abruptly.
Guards reacted.
She sat again.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said you know what happened.”
“I know Monroe kept her alive.”
“Why?”
“Because Megan hid copies of the evidence.”
Clara stared.
“Monroe needed to know where.”
“For how long?”
“At least eighteen months.”
Clara’s face crumpled.
Eighteen months.
While Clara mourned.
While their mother mourned.
Megan had been somewhere.
Alive.
Terrified.
Alone.
“What happened after that?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I don’t know.”
Clara slammed her hand against the glass.
“Tell me.”
“I DON’T KNOW.”
Both women breathed hard.
Vanessa whispered, “But Stephen knows.”
“Where is he?”
“I can help you find him.”
Clara looked at her with hatred.
“Why?”
Vanessa laughed weakly.
“Because Monroe will kill me whether I cooperate or not.”
“So this is survival.”
“Yes.”
At least Vanessa did not pretend otherwise.
“What does Stephen want?”
“Protection.”
“From Monroe?”
“From Bellweather.”
Clara frowned.
“Monroe is Bellweather.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Clara froze.
“What?”
“Monroe is Wren.”
“Yes.”
“Wren runs enforcement.”
Vanessa leaned close.
“But Bellweather is someone else.”
Clara’s skin went cold.
“Who?”
Vanessa whispered one name.
Clara stopped breathing.
When she returned to the secure house, Adrian immediately knew something was wrong.
“What did she say?”
Clara looked at Olivia.
Then at Emma.
Then at Adrian.
“Bellweather is alive.”
Adrian stared.
“Who is it?”
Clara answered.
May you like
“Your mother.”
