Chapter 12 - WREN

Emergency lights glowed red.
Marcus drew his weapon.
Daniel backed toward a concrete pillar.
Olivia gripped Clara’s arm.
Adrian looked toward the sealed steel door.
“Monroe.”
Her voice returned through hidden speakers.
“Your father always said curiosity was hereditary.”
Adrian’s rage sharpened.
“You killed Rachel?”
“No.”
“Then open the door.”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“To finish a job your father should have finished years ago.”
Clara looked around.
The archive.
Documents.
Evidence.
Monroe intended to destroy it.
Marcus smelled something.
“Gasoline.”
Liquid began flowing beneath a far storage rack.
Daniel swore.
“She’s going to burn it.”
Marcus searched for another exit.
Old blueprints showed a maintenance tunnel.
Adrian remembered nothing about one.
Then Clara noticed a narrow vent behind shelving.
They moved boxes.
A steel hatch appeared.
Locked.
Daniel found a crowbar.
Together Marcus and Adrian forced it.
Above them, Monroe continued speaking.
“Thomas believed information was power.”
Adrian shoved harder against the hatch.
“He was wrong.”
“What is power, Adrian?”
The lock cracked.
He answered.
“Knowing when to let people go.”
For once, he meant it.
The hatch opened into a narrow crawlspace.
Marcus sent Olivia first.
Clara followed.
Then Daniel.
Adrian stayed behind.
Marcus glared.
“Move.”
“After you.”
“Not the time for heroics.”
“It isn’t.”
Adrian looked at the evidence shelves.
“We need the drives.”
Marcus grabbed two storage cases.
Smoke began filling the archive.
They entered the crawlspace.
Flames erupted behind them.
The tunnel ended near the abandoned garden.
They emerged coughing.
Police units surrounded the estate.
But Detective Monroe was gone.
Her officers had been diverted by a false emergency call.
She had planned everything.
Within hours, federal authorities took over.
Monroe became a fugitive.
Her background unraveled quickly.
Her father had been Thomas Cole’s attorney.
She grew up around the Cole organization.
Thomas financed part of her education.
She joined law enforcement while secretly helping protect Bellweather.
A perfect position.
She could redirect investigations.
Alter evidence.
Destroy files.
Protect useful people.
Punish dangerous ones.
Megan Bennett’s death had occurred in Monroe’s jurisdiction.
So had several unexplained disappearances linked to Thomas Cole’s former business partners.
Adrian sat in stunned silence.
For days he had trusted Monroe.
Again.
Trust.
Again.
The wrong person.
Clara stood nearby.
He looked at her.
“How do I know who to trust anymore?”
She answered without hesitation.
“You don’t.”
He frowned.
“You stop expecting certainty.”
She sat opposite him.
“You watch what people do.”
Adrian looked down.
“That didn’t work very well for me.”
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“You watched Vanessa’s performance.”
“You ignored years of my actions.”
That truth stung.
But he needed it.
“You’re right.”
Clara continued.
“Trust isn’t instinct.”
“It’s evidence collected over time.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And once you break it?”
“Then the other person decides whether they want to collect new evidence.”
Not the person who broke it.
The person who was hurt.
He understood.
Later that night federal investigators recovered part of the archive.
One waterproof safe survived the fire.
Inside were recent files.
Monroe’s reports.
She had been monitoring Vanessa.
Martin.
Stephen.
And Clara.
One document concerned Emma.
PROJECT CONTINUITY.
Adrian’s hands shook as he read.
Emma was not simply a target.
She was financially important.
Rachel’s estate had transferred a trust to both daughters.
If Adrian died, control passed temporarily to a designated family trustee until Olivia turned twenty-five.
The original trustee had been Daniel.
But Rachel quietly changed it weeks before her death.
The new trustee was Clara Bennett.
Adrian stared.
“Clara?”
She looked equally stunned.
“I didn’t know.”
The legal amendment had never been activated because Adrian remained alive.
But Vanessa’s attempts to remove Clara suddenly made sense.
If Adrian died later, Clara would control billions in family assets on behalf of the children.
Bellweather needed her gone.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Then the stroller incident was only the beginning.”
Marcus nodded grimly.
“They weren’t trying to kill Emma.”
Clara understood first.
“They were trying to make Adrian fire me.”
“Yes.”
Then Olivia whispered.
“And once Clara was gone?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
May you like
“They could move on to you.”
